Chapter 9: The Anatomy of a Ruse

Arthur walked slowly to the desk, his hand resting briefly on the smooth walnut surface before he looked up at his daughter. “The press office has released the official statement,” he said, his voice measured. “We’ve framed the transition as an internal restructuring due to regulatory non-compliance. The stock is taking a hit, down twelve percent in pre-market trading, but it’s stabilizing faster than the analysts predicted.”
“Twelve percent is manageable,” Elena replied, setting the watch back down on the desk. “The real test will be the bondholders meeting tomorrow morning. If they panic, we could see a liquidity crunch across our regional holdings.”
“They won’t panic,” Arthur said firmly, walking over to stand beside her. “Not if I walk into that room with you. They know my signature, Elena, but they are beginning to understand your spine. You proved last night that you have the courage to pull the trigger when everyone else was paralyzed by fear.”
“It wasn't courage, Arthur. It was self-defense,” Elena said, her voice carrying a trace of bitterness. “Julian wasn't just skimming profits; he was selling off our core infrastructure to a consortium of shell companies controlled by overseas interests. If we had waited another month, there wouldn’t have been a company left to save.”
Arthur nodded slowly, his gaze drifting back toward the city skyline. “I know. I saw the early warning signs six months ago, but I kept making excuses for him. I kept hoping that responsibility would catch up with his ambition. That was my failure, not yours.”

“We share the blame for letting it go this far,” Elena acknowledged, placing a hand lightly on her father’s arm. “But we can’t dwell on what we missed. We have to secure the supply chains, audit the regional offices, and ensure that every employee whose pension was compromised is made whole before the end of the fiscal year.”
“Starting with the pension fund,” Arthur agreed immediately. “Transfer twenty million from my personal reserve accounts into the employee trust fund immediately. We honor our commitments first, profits second. That is how your grandfather built this business, and that is how we will rebuild it now.”
