Chapter 7: The Arrest in the Lobby

Down in the main lobby, the pristine white marble floor was now surrounded by four federal marshals in dark tactical vests, their badges gleaming under the bright recessed lighting. Julian stood near the glass revolving doors, his black double-breasted suit slightly rumpled, his tie loosened at the collar. Gone was the immaculate, untouchable executive from the morning; in his place stood a cornered man realizing the walls were closing in permanently. Two marshals stood on either side of him, their hands resting near their service belts as they secured a heavy leather attaché case onto the reception counter. A crowd of journalists and curious onlookers had already gathered behind the exterior glass barrier, camera flashes strobing through the double-paned windows like silent lightning.
Julian raised his chin defiantly as flashbulbs popped outside. "This is an unlawful detention," he told the lead marshal, his voice carrying the practiced arrogance of a man who had never faced real consequences. "I am the executive vice president of Vanguard Industries. This arrest is a politically motivated stunt orchestrated by a disgruntled board member who refuses to accept retirement."
The lead marshal, a weathered man with silver hair and a stern jaw, did not blink. He snapped open the leather attaché case on the counter, revealing stacks of unredacted stock certificates, bearer bonds, and foreign passport documents bearing Julian’s photograph under an alias. "Mr. Vance, you are being taken into federal custody on charges of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and conspiracy to commit corporate espionage," the marshal stated evenly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

From the mezzanine balcony overlooking the lobby, Clara and Beatrice watched the entire sequence unfold in quiet vindication. The silver suitcase from the morning still lay abandoned near the elevator bank like a discarded husk, its contents now safely logged into police evidence. Clara felt a profound wave of relief wash over her, yet it was tempered by the heavy realization of how close they had come to losing everything. She looked at Beatrice, whose face remained a mask of solemn reflection. The arrest of Julian Vance was a victory, but the internal rot he had exposed within Vanguard’s corporate culture would require years of painful restructuring to excise completely.
As the marshals escorted Julian through the revolving doors toward an unmarked federal SUV waiting outside, he caught sight of Clara and Beatrice standing on the balcony above. For a brief second, his cold, calculated facade shattered, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. He mouthed a silent warning before the tinted glass of the vehicle doors closed him off from the world, sealing his fate. Clara did not flinch. She placed her hand gently over her wrist, feeling the familiar, reassuring weight of her silver charm bracelet. The nightmare was ending, but their real work was only just beginning.
