Chapter 4 - The Heavy Knock

The sound of heavy fists hammering against the wooden front door reverberated through the cramped living room like rolling thunder, freezing every occupant in their tracks. Brenda let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as all the color rushed entirely from her face, leaving her looking hollow and ghost-like under the harsh overhead lights. Marcus didn't hesitate for a single second; with astonishing agility for a man of his bulk, he dove across the room toward the side window, throwing the sash upward and scanning the dark alleyway outside for a viable escape route. Malik stood paralyzed between the bloody knife in the open drawer and the frantic adults scrambling around him, his mind desperately trying to bridge the gap between his ordinary working-class life and the violent criminal reality crashing down around them. Another round of aggressive pounding rattled the deadbolt, followed by the unmistakable jingle of tactical gear and a stern command from the porch.
"Open the door! We have a warrant to search the premises!" the voice barked again, carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument.
Brenda stumbled backward, her legs tangling in the edge of the living room rug, and crashed heavily against the wall before sliding down into a breathless heap on the floor. She looked up at Malik with eyes wide with pleading desperation, her voice cracking as she whispered words that defied all logic.
"Malik... take the knife. Hide it in your room. Tell them it's yours," Brenda begged, her hands clawing frantically at the hem of her burgundy shirt.
Malik stared down at his mother in utter disbelief, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird trying to break free. The sheer absurdity of her demand cut through his fear, replacing it with a cold, paralyzing wave of alienation. She wasn't just protecting Marcus anymore; she was willing to sacrifice her own son’s future, his freedom, and his entire life to shield a man she had known for less than a year.
"Are you insane?" Malik whispered harshly, stepping away from the drawer as if the mere proximity to the weapon could contaminate him. "You want me to take the fall for a murder? What is wrong with you, Ma?"
Marcus hissed from the window, his head whipping around with a furious scowl. "Shut up, kid! If they find what's down in that basement, your mother goes away for the rest of her natural life. Is that what you want? You want to put your own mother behind bars?"
The emotional manipulation was thick and suffocating, wrapping around Malik’s conscience like a barbed-wire snare. He looked at Brenda, curled up on the floor like a broken doll, and felt a profound, aching pity war instantly with the burning instinct of self-preservation. The pounding at the front door intensified as a heavy boot slammed against the wood right beside the frame, splintering the dry timber and causing the brass deadbolt to rattle violently in its housing. Time had completely run out; any second now, the door would fly open, and the police would swarm the living room. Malik’s hand hovered inches above the rusted, blood-stained hunting knife in the open drawer, his fingers trembling as he weighed the catastrophic consequences of touching it versus watching his mother's life crumble into dust.
"This is your last chance, kid!" Marcus barked, hoisting one leg over the window sill while keeping a wary eye on the front entrance. "Grab the blade or we all burn!"
Malik closed his eyes, swallowed hard, and slowly extended his right hand down into the wooden drawer, his fingertips finally brushing against the cold, jagged metal of the knife handle.
"Police! Going in!" a voice roared from the porch, followed by a deafening crash as the front door was kicked wide open, splintering wood flying in all directions as armed officers flooded the room.

As flashlights cut through the dim interior, blinding Malik with intense white beams, a heavy, cold hand suddenly clamped firmly around Malik’s wrist from behind, yanking his arm upward into the blinding light while a familiar voice whispered a shocking betrayal right into his ear.
