Chapter 8 - The Federal Court Seal

The heavy kitchen door pushed open with a soft metallic click, and a middle-aged woman wearing a worn beige trench coat stepped into the dining area. She walked with a purposeful, unhurried stride, holding a thick manila envelope sealed with heavy red wax and stamped with a striking federal court seal. The tension in the room shifted instantly from corporate arrogance to cold, institutional dread.
Julian Vance’s smug smile faltered for the first time. He narrowed his eyes, stepping slightly away from the counter as the woman approached.
“Can I help you?” Julian asked, his voice losing its smooth cadence and taking on a sharp, defensive edge. “This is a private corporate negotiation. Members of the public are not permitted after hours.”
The woman ignored Julian entirely. She bypassed the counter, walking straight up to Arthur Vance and Martha Henderson. She opened a leather portfolio, pulled out an official ID badge, and flashed it briefly.
“Special Agent Rachel Vance, Federal Trade Commission, Division of Consumer Protection,” the woman announced, her voice clear, professional, and entirely devoid of emotion.
Arthur blinked in surprise, looking closely at the badge before looking up at the federal agent.
“Rachel?” Arthur said, his voice dropping in disbelief. “I haven’t seen you since the family Thanksgiving five years ago. What are you doing here?”
“Doing my job, Uncle Arthur,” Agent Rachel Vance replied, her gaze shifting immediately to Julian. She turned her attention to her cousin with a cold, piercing stare. “And it looks like I arrived just in time to stop a textbook case of interstate digital extortion and fraudulent debt-peonage.”
Julian’s face went pale, though he quickly forced a nervous, dismissive laugh.
“Extortion? That’s an absurd accusation, Rachel,” Julian protested, waving a hand dismissively. “We run a legitimate marketing optimization firm. Standard terms of service agreements. Everyone clicks ‘agree’ without reading. It’s capitalism, not a federal crime.”
Agent Rachel did not smile. She pulled a formal legal document from the manila envelope and held it out toward Julian, though she did not let him touch it.
“Section four, paragraph two of your so-called digital waiver was invalidated by federal statute under the Consumer Debt Protection Act of 2021,” Agent Rachel stated clearly. “You cannot seize human likeness rights as collateral for municipal utility debts, nor can you artificially engineer transaction failures to manufacture viral trauma porn for profit.”
Brenda stepped forward from the doorway, her voice trembling with panic.
“We have thousands of viewers live right now!” Brenda blurted out desperately. “The metrics are real! The engagement is organic!”
“The metrics are fraudulent, and the engagement is driven by automated bot farms operating out of server racks registered to Apex Digital Media in Delaware,” Agent Rachel retorted smoothly, pulling a second document from her portfolio and handing it directly to Arthur. “We’ve been tracking your corporate shell companies for six months, Julian. Tonight’s stunt at the Maplewood Diner was the final piece of evidence we needed for a federal injunction.”
Toby clutched the edge of the wooden counter, his hazel eyes darting between the federal agent, his grandmother, and the sweating corporate executives.
“Does this mean… grandma doesn’t have to do the videos anymore?” Toby asked softly, his voice trembling with cautious hope. “Does she get to keep her food?”
Martha gently rested her hand on Toby’s shoulder, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief.
“Yes, sweetheart,” Martha whispered, pulling the boy into a warm, protective hug. “I think the nice agent just helped us.”
Julian stared at his cousin, his professional veneer completely shattered, revealing a desperate, cornered man beneath the expensive charcoal suit.
“You think an injunction stops anything?” Julian sneered, his voice rising in panic and anger. “By tomorrow morning, our legal team will appeal this in federal district court, and you’ll find yourself buried in motions while my servers keep streaming twenty-four hours a day!”

Before Julian could pull his phone out to make a frantic call to his attorneys, the front door of the diner burst open again with a loud crash, and three armed federal marshals stepped into the room, their dark tactical vests clearly displaying official insignia.
