Chapter 12: The Turning Point

The second set of footsteps slammed onto the concrete floor of the basement archive. A burly man in a dark jacket stepped into the aisle behind Julian, blocking the only remaining path to the stairs. Julian spun around, his back to the metal shelving units, trapped between Marcus Sterling and an unknown operative.
"Don't do anything foolish, Mr. Vance," the operative warned, resting a heavy hand near his waist where a heavy flashlight—or something worse—was holstered. "Mr. Sterling just wants the files. Hand them over, walk away, and nobody gets hurt."
Julian didn't look at the operative. His eyes remained locked on Marcus, whose expression had returned to a chilling, bureaucratic calm.
"You really think you can walk out of here and pin centuries of corporate fraud on a dead man and a missing brother?" Julian asked, keeping his voice steady, buying time. He knew Claire and Lily were upstairs alone. If these men decided to sweep the building after dealing with him, the danger to them was unimaginable.
"We aren't pinning anything on anyone, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, zipping up the black canvas duffel bag filled with stolen deeds. "We are simply liquidating assets. The firm will file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy by Monday morning. You will be held personally liable for the fraudulent loan guarantees your father executed—signatures which, I might remind you, were countersigned by you on three separate project renewals over the last five years."
Julian’s stomach churned. Marcus had planned every detail. The trap wasn't just designed to steal money; it was engineered to ensure Julian took the fall for the entire multi-million-dollar collapse.
"And David?" Julian demanded. "Where is he?"
Marcus gestured to the operative with a flick of his chin. "Lock him in the secure records vault at the end of the aisle. By the time Monday morning rolls around, he'll have plenty of company to figure it out."
The operative lunged forward, closing the distance between them with surprising speed. Julian didn't wait. Drawing on pure survival instinct, he grabbed a heavy metal binder from the shelf beside him and hurled it directly at the operative's chest. The man grunted, stumbling back as the metal corners struck his windpipe.
Julian didn't hesitate. He ducked under the operative's outstretched arm and bolted down the aisle toward the stairwell, his white tuxedo shirt fluttering in the dark.

"Get him!" Marcus shouted, his calm demeanor finally shattering into panic.
Footsteps thundered behind Julian as he sprinted past the rows of shelving, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. He hit the concrete stairs three at a time, his legs burning, his mind screaming a single directive: Get to Claire and Lily.
