Chapter 13: The Press Conference

The plaza outside the Vance Museum of Art was a sea of flashing camera strobes, raised boom microphones, and reporters shouting competing questions into their handheld recorders. When the massive metal security doors began to glide open with their characteristic heavy, hydraulic hum, the roar of the press corps subsided into a tense, expectant murmur.
Clara Vance stepped out into the morning sunlight, flanked by Detective Vance and Marcus Vance. She wore her tailored black wool coat over the emerald green satin gown, her posture straight and unyielding. The bruises on her cheek were visible under the bright television lights, a silent testament to the violence that had occurred behind those closed doors, but her gaze was direct, unwavering, and completely devoid of fear.
She stepped up to the podium bearing the gold-embossed seal of the Vance Foundation. She did not use notes. She did not wait for the noise to die down completely. She simply rested her hands on the wooden edges of the lectern and began to speak.
“Good morning,” Clara said, her voice steady, rich, and carrying across the plaza with absolute authority. “Twelve hours ago, this institution was subjected to a coordinated corporate hostile takeover orchestrated by former executive Julian Sterling and his associates. They attempted to liquidate our cultural heritage, embezzle our endowment funds, and illegally seize control of our private medical trusts.”
A wall of camera shutters clicked furiously, capturing every syllable, every micro-expression on her bruised face.
“They believed that wealth could be weaponized without consequence,” Clara continued, her dark eyes scanning the crowd of reporters. “They believed that institutional corruption could be hidden behind locked doors and polished marble pillars. They were wrong. They underestimated the resilience of the people who built this foundation, and they fundamentally misunderstood the power of absolute truth.”
She paused, letting the weight of her words settle over the crowd. Behind her, Detective Vance stood with his hands clasped behind his back, a silent guardian of the law that had finally caught up with the predators of the corporate world.
“As of this morning, Julian Sterling and three members of our executive board have been formally indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple counts of fraud, trafficking, and conspiracy,” Clara announced, her voice ringing clear and resonant. “All stolen antiquities are currently being catalogged for immediate repatriation to their rightful homes. The Vance Foundation is not dying, and it is not for sale. We are restructuring from the ground up, with total transparency, absolute accountability, and an unshakeable commitment to historical truth.”
A reporter from a major national network thrust his hand into the air, shouting over the din. “Ms. Vance! What does this mean for your father, Arthur Vance? Will he be returning to active leadership?”
Clara offered a faint, genuine smile—the first true smile she had shown since the nightmare began.
“My father’s legacy is secure, and his vision remains the foundational bedrock of everything we do,” Clara replied into the microphones. “He fought to protect history, and tonight, history protected him. Thank you.”
