Chapter 1

The impact against the cold marble pillar rattled the old man’s bones, sending a sharp twinge through his spine. Arthur Vance barely winced, his breathing remaining slow and measured despite the rough treatment. The security guard, a towering mountain of muscle named Marcus, pinned him tightly by the lapels of his worn brown leather jacket. The brightly lit lobby of the Grand Continental Hotel hummed with oblivious luxury, wealthy guests sipping champagne just yards away.

“You think I wouldn't notice a thief like you?” Marcus snarled, his face twisted in raw aggression as he leaned inches from Arthur’s deeply wrinkled face.

Arthur’s faded blue eyes flickered with a quiet, unsettling calm. He did not yell, nor did he beg for mercy. He simply looked at the enraged guard with profound pity.

“You are looking at the wrong thing, young man,” Arthur whispered, his voice steady and low.

“Shut your mouth,” Marcus barked, tightening his grip. “I watched you wander into the restricted archive corridor. Nobody goes in there unless they are stealing company secrets.”

Instead of answering, Arthur tilted his chin downward.

Pinned to the thick brown leather of Arthur’s jacket was a small, unassuming lapel pin shaped like a vintage key. Suddenly, the tiny metal center of the pin clicked audibly and flashed with a brilliant, pulsing green light. The illumination cut through the harsh lobby lights, casting an emerald hue across Marcus’s flushed skin.

Marcus blinked, the aggressive words dying instantly in his throat. His facial expression shifted from intense rage to sudden, absolute shock. The color drained from the guard’s cheeks as he recognized the insignia. It wasn't a thief’s gadget. It was the override code of the hotel's founding board—a code that hadn't been activated in forty years. Marcus stared at the pulsing green light, his eyes widening in mounting disbelief as he slowly realized he had just violently assaulted the majority owner of the entire corporate conglomerate.

Arthur gently placed a weathered hand over Marcus’s massive, trembling wrist and whispered, “Now, let us discuss what you actually saw in that hallway.”
