Chapter 9

The thunderous crash of the front door splintering open echoed down the hallway, followed by the heavy, boots-on-hardwood sound of federal agents storming into the house. Shouts of "Clear the hallway!" and "Secure the perimeter!" bounced off the walls, drawing closer to the kitchen with terrifying speed.

Mark didn't wait. He lunged forward with surprising speed, his hand clawing at the leather ledger in Clara’s grip, trying to rip it away before the agents could reach the kitchen archway.

"Give it to me!" Mark hissed, his polite mask completely gone, revealing the desperate, cornered criminal underneath.

Before Mark’s fingers could close around the book, David moved with explosive force. He grabbed Mark by the collar of his designer shirt and slammed him hard against the side of the stainless-steel refrigerator with a deafening metallic clatter that rattled the magnets and spices stored on top.

"Get your hands off her," David growled, pinning Mark against the appliance with one forearm pressed tightly against his throat.

Mark choked, clawing at David’s sleeve, his face turning a mottled red. "You’re going down with me, you idiot! The signature on the primary embezzlement form isn't mine—it’s yours!"

Before David could respond, three armed federal agents in heavy tactical vests poured into the kitchen, their flashlights cutting through the flashing red and blue exterior lights.

"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!" the lead agent shouted, leveling a service weapon directly at David and Mark.

Clara stumbled backward, her breath catching in her throat as she raised her hands instinctively, the leather ledger slipping from her fingers and landing heavily in the puddle of dark sauce near the broken gravy boat.

Martha slumped completely against the pantry door, sliding down until she was sitting on the floor next to Sarah, both women weeping quietly in utter defeat.

Rachel let out a piercing shriek, terrified by the guns and the shouting, and scrambled desperately across the floor to hide behind Clara’s legs, her pink dress soaking up more of the sticky mess.

"Lower your weapons! Everyone freeze!" the agent commanded, his eyes scanning the chaotic room, taking in the spilled sauce, the crying child, and the tense standoff by the refrigerator.

David slowly lowered his arm, releasing Mark, and raised his hands in the air, stepping away from the appliance. Mark slumped against the fridge, coughing violently and gasping for breath, glaring daggers at David.

"Agent," Mark wheezed, pointing a shaky finger at David and Clara. "Thank God you're here. They’re holding me hostage. That man—he’s supposed to be dead. He and Clara staged an insurance fraud scheme and kidnapped me."

Clara stared at Mark in sheer disbelief, her voice catching in her dry throat. "You lying bastard—"

"Shut your mouth, ma'am," the federal agent instructed sharply, stepping closer and kicking the leather ledger aside with his boot. "Hands where I can see them. Agent Miller, secure the perimeter and check the basement."

As two agents rushed past the kitchen island and pulled open the cellar door, one of them reached down and picked up the leather ledger from the sauce, flipping it open to a heavily marked page filled with signatures.

The agent stopped dead, his flashlight illuminating a name written at the very bottom of the page that made even the seasoned federal investigator pale.
