Chapter 10

Despite the outward calm settling over the Vance estate, the echoes of Elena’s betrayal still cast a long shadow across the city's high-society circles. News of the divorce, the embezzlement charges, and the sudden emergence of a long-lost sister spread through elite galas and country club lounges like wildfire. For years, Elena had cultivated an image of untouchable perfection; her sudden, disgraced fall from grace provided endless fodder for gossip columns and whispered conversations over dry martinis.

Elena herself was holed up in a high-rise downtown apartment—a modest property purchased under a third-party shell corporation—awaiting her upcoming court appearance. Gone were the designer silk dresses, the sparkling diamond jewelry, and the adoring staff. She wore a simple charcoal turtleneck and dark trousers, her long brown hair pulled back without its usual meticulous styling.

A sharp knock at her door interrupted her brooding stare out the window at the gray city skyline. She opened it to find her brother, Arthur—the very man whose failing real estate ventures had drained the charitable foundation funds that landed her in this legal nightmare.

“What do you want, Arthur?” Elena snapped, stepping back to let him enter the cramped living room. “Haven't you done enough damage?”

Arthur dropped a thick leather briefcase onto the small coffee table and ran a hand through his thinning hair. “I came to see how you're holding up. The word on the street is that Julian’s new sister is auditing every single ledger, restructuring the corporate board, and cutting ties with all our old associates.”

Elena let out a bitter, humorous scoff. “She’s a maid, Arthur. A nobody who walked in off the street with a fake sob story and a tarnished piece of metal. Julian is a fool, blinded by misplaced guilt and sentimentality. He threw away a decade of marriage for a woman who used to scrub his floors.”

“Well, that maid now controls fifty percent of the Vance estate,” Arthur pointed out bluntly, refusing to sugarcoat the reality. “And her lawyers are cooperating fully with federal prosecutors. If you don't take a plea deal and return the embezzled funds immediately, you're looking at real prison time, Elena. Julian isn't bluffing.”

Elena walked over to the kitchen counter, poured herself a glass of tap water, and stared at her reflection in the dark glass of the microwave. The realization of her absolute powerlessness hit her with crushing force. She had played every card in her deck, manipulated every relationship, and weaponized every ounce of social leverage she possessed, only to be utterly defeated by a truth she refused to see.

“I won't survive a prison sentence, Arthur,” she whispered, her voice cracking for the first time.

“Then stop fighting a war you've already lost,” Arthur advised grimly. “Sign the plea. Give back what's left. Start over.”
