Chapter 11 - The Phantom in the Vault

The heavy oak grandfather clock in the main foyer struck 2:00 AM with a hollow, echoing chime that reverberated through the darkened mansion. Maddie stood frozen at the base of the grand staircase, her eyes locked on the glowing red notification blinking relentlessly on her encrypted phone screen. Zurich vault transfer in progress: 48% complete.

The underground panic room was located three levels beneath the estate, built into the bedrock of the Newport cliffs during the Cold War. Only her grandfather, her father, and Maddie herself possessed the dual-key biometric clearances required to unlock the reinforced steel vault door. If the system was currently processing a master override from inside that bunker, it meant one impossible truth: her father hadn’t died a decade ago. He had faked his own death to orchestrate the ultimate financial heist from the shadows, using Viktor, Sarah, and Bradley as disposable pawns in a decades-long game of chess.

“Maddie?” Marcus’s voice crackled frantically through the phone’s speaker. “Maddie, are you still there? The Zurich firewall is melting down! Whoever is inside that vault is using a Level-Omega override code that only the founding directors possessed. That means—”

“I know who it is, Marcus,” Maddie interrupted, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper. “Lock down the external fiber lines. Cut all satellite uplinks to the estate immediately.”

“I can’t do that remotely,” Marcus argued, keyboard clacking furiously in the background. “The override is originating from an internal hard-wire terminal inside the foundation’s primary server sub-basement. Someone physically plugged into the mainframe!”

Maddie didn’t hesitate. She turned sharply toward the grand hallway, bypassing the front doors entirely, and headed straight for the concealed service elevator hidden behind a row of ancestral oil portraits. She entered her biometric thumbprint into the recessed wall panel. The heavy iron door slid open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing a dark, vertical shaft plunging deep into the subterranean bedrock of the cliffside.
