Chapter 10 - The Municipal Abyss

The roar of rushing water deafened Clara’s ears as she and Lily slid down the slick concrete chute, plunging into the subterranean maze of the city’s municipal flood tunnels. They landed with a heavy splash in knee-deep, ice-cold runoff water, the current violently tugging at Clara’s ruined white gown and threatening to sweep them both off their feet.
"Hold onto me, Lily! Wrap your arms around my neck!" Clara screamed over the thunderous echo of the rushing water, bracing her back against a rusted iron support beam.
"Mommy, I'm cold!" Lily cried, her small arms locking tightly around Clara’s neck, her face buried in her shoulder as spray splashed over them from the dark, cavernous tunnel ahead.
Clara scanned the dim gloom. Emergency fluorescent strips flickered weakly along the curved concrete ceiling, casting a sickly green hue over the rushing water. They were inside the primary drainage artery that ran directly beneath the financial district—miles away from the luxury mansion, but entirely unprotected in the freezing, toxic underbelly of the city.
High above them, through a heavy iron storm grate set into the ceiling, the distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the night air. The authorities had finally arrived at the estate. Julian’s carefully constructed empire of lies was imploding in real time, but that didn't mean Clara and Lily were safe. Vance’s private cleanup crew would be sweeping the municipal access points within minutes.
Clara began wading slowly against the current, using the concrete wall for support as she navigated the slippery, algae-covered floorboards. Every step felt like lifting lead weights, her muscles screaming from exhaustion, adrenaline, and freezing temperatures.
Suddenly, a heavy splash echoed from further down the tunnel. A beam of white tactical light cut through the green gloom, sweeping across the rushing water.
"Down here! I see movement by the runoff junction!" a gruff voice shouted through the cavernous space.
Clara froze, pressing herself flat against the curved concrete wall of the tunnel, pulling Lily half-submerged beneath the surface of the water to keep them hidden in the shadows. Two men in dark tactical gear waded cautiously through the current, their rifles raised and scanning the water with methodical precision. These weren't Vance's corporate fixers anymore; they were local mercenaries hired directly by Julian before his fall, operating on an open-ended kill order.
The mercenaries stopped just twenty yards away, their flashlights sweeping back and forth across the stagnant water where Clara and Lily were holding their breath.
"Clear this sector. If they're in the tunnels, they won't survive the flash flood warning anyway," the lead mercenary muttered into his comms unit, turning his back to check a side corridor.
Clara let out a silent, shaky breath, slowly guiding Lily toward a rusted iron maintenance ladder bolted to the concrete wall just a few feet away. But as her hand reached out to grab the lowest rung, her foot slipped on a patch of slick moss, sending a loud splash echoing across the water.
The lead mercenary whipped around instantly, his flashlight beam locking directly onto them. "Found them! Take the shot!"

A bullet pierced the water inches from Clara's hip as she scrambled up the iron rungs of the ladder, hoisting Lily ahead of her just as a heavy metal security grate slammed shut at the top of the shaft, locking them inside a narrow, vertical maintenance chimney with no way out.
