Chapter 6 - The Watcher at the Gate

The cold autumn wind whistled faintly against the reinforced glass of the French doors, carrying the distant sound of police sirens fading away down the private access road. Evelyn remained kneeling on the imported Turkish rug, her hand still resting gently on Lily’s shoulder, but her sharp gaze was locked entirely on the shadowy figure standing motionless beneath the perimeter security light near the estate’s wrought-iron gates.
Arthur stood up straight, his dark hair catching the warm amber glow of the chandelier, and followed his mother’s line of sight. A deep frown carved a harsh line across his forehead. "Who is that? Security cleared the perimeter twenty minutes ago."
"Security was hired, managed, and monitored by Elena for the last three years," Evelyn replied, her voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper that carried an unmistakable edge of wariness. She slowly pushed herself up with the assistance of her cane, her joints popping slightly in the heavy silence. "Never assume an empire is clean just because you swept the floors, Arthur."
Lily clutched the hem of Arthur’s blue suit trousers, looking up with wide, apprehensive eyes. "Daddy, is the bad lady coming back?"
"No, sweetheart, she’s not coming back," Arthur reassured her softly, picking the little girl up into his arms and resting her head against his shoulder. He looked back at his mother. "That person by the gate... they’ve been standing there since the marshals left with Elena. Do you think it’s one of her accomplices?"
Evelyn turned away from the glass, her expression hardening into a mask of calculated strategy. "Accomplices don't stand out in the open waiting to be noticed. That wasn't a warning from Elena. That was an introduction."
Marcus, the legal counsel who had remained quietly in the corner packing his black leather portfolio, stepped forward, his brow furrowed with professional concern. "Evelyn, if there’s a secondary player involved in the asset diversion we didn’t uncover during the forensic audit, the board meeting tomorrow morning could turn into an absolute bloodbath."
"Let them try," Evelyn said coldly, walking toward the grand mahogany table where half-filled champagne glasses still stood like silent sentinels of the evening’s disaster. She picked up an untouched glass, swirling the golden liquid slowly before setting it back down without drinking. "The Vanguard family didn't survive a century of hostile takeovers, industrial espionage, and economic depressions by hiding under the bed when a new threat appeared."
Arthur shifted Lily slightly in his arms, feeling the little girl’s breathing slow down as exhaustion finally overtook her adrenaline-fueled panic. "Mother, Lily needs to sleep. I’ll take her up to the north wing nursery. But we need to talk about who that person at the gate is before midnight. If they have access to the secondary encryption keys Elena mentioned—"
"They don't," Evelyn interrupted sharply, turning to face him. "Because those keys were never in Elena’s possession to begin with. She was just a distraction, Arthur. A loud, expensive, predictable distraction used to keep us looking at the front door while the real vault was being picked from the inside."
A cold shudder ran down Arthur’s spine. The implications of his mother’s words hung heavily in the air. For years, he had believed Elena’s ruthless ambition was the sole cancer eating away at the family foundation. But if Elena was merely a pawn in a much larger, more sophisticated game, then the enemy was already sitting inside the fortress.
"Who?" Arthur demanded in a harsh whisper, careful not to wake the sleeping child in his arms. "Who else knew about the Cayman accounts and the trust restructuring?"
Evelyn didn't answer immediately. She walked slowly toward the grand arched doorway leading into the estate’s private library, her cane tapping rhythmically against the stone floor. She stopped at the threshold, turning back over her shoulder with a look of grim realization.

"Check the wall safe in my private study," Evelyn commanded softly. "The physical master ledger isn't there anymore."
