Chapter 10: Confronting the Past Outside the Office

That evening, as Clara left the corporate headquarters and walked toward her parked sedan in the underground garage, she noticed a familiar silhouette leaning against a concrete pillar near her designated parking space. It was not a federal marshal or a corporate adversary, but David—a former junior financial analyst who had worked under Julian Vance and had been the one to secretly leak the initial spreadsheet anomalies to Clara before the dinner party disaster. David looked exhausted, his suit jacket unbuttoned and his eyes darting nervously toward the shadows of the parking garage as if expecting someone to emerge from the darkness at any moment.

Clara slowed her pace, keeping her hand resting casually inside her blazer pocket where her phone was kept. "David. You shouldn't be here. It’s not safe for you to be seen meeting with me outside of official legal channels," Clara said quietly, stopping a few feet away from him. David offered a bitter, self-deprecating smile as he shoved his hands deep into his trouser pockets. "Safe? Ms. Sterling, nowhere is safe for anyone who ever breathed the same air as Julian Vance. After the federal indictment dropped, my apartment was searched twice by men who didn't identify themselves as law enforcement. They’re looking for the physical flash drive containing Julian’s encrypted offshore ledger—the one I gave you."

Clara studied his face carefully, noting the genuine terror in his eyes. She knew the importance of that flash drive; it was the master key that connected Julian’s domestic crimes to international political figures who were still operating in the shadows. "I have the drive in a secure federal vault, David. It is entirely out of reach of anyone trying to bury the truth," Clara assured him, her calm demeanor serving as an anchor for his frayed nerves. "If you are in danger, my grandfather’s security team can relocate you to a safehouse outside the state within the hour. You don't have to carry this fear alone anymore."

David shook his head slowly, looking down at the concrete floor. "Relocation won't solve the root problem. Julian’s associates aren't just corporate criminals; they’re part of an international syndicate that used Vance Enterprises as a front to wash billions in illegal capital. When Julian goes to trial next month, they’re going to do everything in their power to discredit the evidence, discredit the witnesses, and protect themselves," David warned, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. Clara felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but her resolve only hardened further. She realized that dismantling her father's empire was only the first battle in a much larger war for absolute corporate and personal freedom.
