Chapter 14

The screen on the smartphone flickered, and the audio channel clicked open with a burst of static before a smooth, cultured voice echoed through the apartment’s smart-speaker system.

“Did you really think one federal holding cell could contain a family empire, Mark?” the voice asked, dripping with cool, theatrical amusement.

Mark stared at the live feed, his mind reeling in sheer disbelief. The woman on the screen wasn't Clara—she shared Clara’s facial structure, her voice, and her chilling composure, but a small, distinct scar above her left eyebrow revealed the terrifying truth.

“Elena,” Mark whispered, the name slipping out from a distant, forgotten memory from the early days of his marriage before the corporate wars began.

The smart-speaker chuckled softly. “Good memory, Mark. Clara was always the loud, ambitious face of our operations. But I was the strategist. I engineered every corporate acquisition, every offshore account, and yes—even the decoy setup that allowed my twin sister to take the fall while I secured a clean exit.”

On the screen, Elena stepped around the bound figures of Sarah and Lily. She reached down, gently brushing a strand of blonde hair from Lily’s forehead with a gesture so deceptively tender it made Mark’s blood run cold.

“You can’t win this, Elena,” Mark yelled at the camera, his voice shaking with furious desperation. “The FBI knows everything. Clara is already in federal custody!”

“Clara is a pawn who outlived her usefulness,” Elena replied smoothly, her tone turning instantly frigid. “And right now, you are standing in my apartment, holding my evidence, while your precious wife and daughter are waiting for me to decide their final destination.”

Mark grabbed his keys off the console table, turning to sprint toward the door.

“If you take one step out that hallway door, Mark, the security grid in this building locks down permanently, and the ventilation system in their holding room switches to carbon monoxide,” Elena warned, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. “Drop the keys, sit on the stool, and let’s negotiate terms for your survival.”

Mark froze with his hand on the doorknob. He looked back at the smartphone screen, watching Sarah shake her head frantically, mouthing the words don't listen to her through the video feed before Elena stepped forward and placed a heavy hand over Sarah’s mouth.

“What do you want?” Mark asked, his voice dropping into a hollow, defeated whisper.

“Everything,” Elena replied simply. “Sign over your remaining corporate shares, transfer the downtown building deed to my offshore holding account, and meet me at the old Route 9 overpass in exactly twenty minutes. Come alone, or the feed goes black permanently.”

The line went dead, plunging the apartment into an ominous, heavy silence.
