Chapter 8 - The Detective at the Gate

Detective Vance stepped onto the manicured lawn, his heavy boots crushing the delicate petals of the hydrangeas as he marched straight toward Arthur. The afternoon sun caught the silver badge pinned to his wool jacket, gleaming with an undeniable authority that made the garden feel instantly smaller and more confined.
"Arthur Sterling," Detective Vance said, his voice carrying the heavy, gravelly weight of a man who had seen too many corrupt men walk free. "You're under arrest for the arson of the suburban estate on Elm Street and the premeditated homicide of Robert and Evelyn Vance."
Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath that sounded like a sob, his knees finally buckling as he dropped heavily onto the grass beside Clara’s wheelchair.
Arthur didn't run. He couldn't. The two state troopers closed the distance in seconds, their heavy hands clamping down on his shoulders with professional, unyielding force. As they spun him around to snap the steel cuffs onto his wrists, Arthur’s cold eyes locked onto Clara with a venomous glare that promised nightmares.
"You think this is a victory?" Arthur spat out, his voice shaking with suppressed rage as the cold metal click of the handcuffs echoed across the quiet yard. "The foundation has ten more men just like me waiting in the wings. You haven't won anything, little girl."
Clara didn't flinch. She simply looked down at the ruined birthday cake in her lap, watching the last tiny ember of the final candle sputter and die in a thin wisp of grey smoke.
"I didn't want a victory, Arthur," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustle of the American flag above. "I just wanted justice."
Detective Vance watched the cuffs lock into place before turning his attention to Marcus and Clara. His harsh expression softened slightly, though the deep lines around his eyes remained etched with grim reality. He pulled a thick manila folder from under his arm and flipped it open, scanning a few pages before looking up.
"The cyber-crime division flagged that live stream within forty seconds of the broadcast starting," Detective Vance explained, slipping the tablet into his pocket. "By the time he smashed your camera, twenty-two federal agencies had already mirrored the video and frozen the foundation's primary asset accounts."
Marcus wiped a stray tear from his cheek with the back of his hand, staring up at the detective in sheer disbelief. "So... it's really over?"
"The investigation is just beginning," Vance replied grimly, signaling for the troopers to lead Arthur away toward the waiting cruiser parked at the end of the driveway. "And you two need to pack a bag immediately. You're coming into protective custody until the grand jury convenes."

As Arthur was dragged past them, he muttered something unintelligible under his breath, his eyes fixed on the front door of the charred house. Clara watched him go, her fingers tracing the edge of the white bandage on her head. But just as the cruiser doors slammed shut, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the shattered remains of the smartphone hidden in the hydrangeas.
