Chapter 7 - Breaking Through the Floorboards

The water in the drainage tunnel rose from a shallow trickle to ankle-deep within seconds, icy and turbulent as it surged from the breached northern retaining wall. Mark scrambled up the rusted iron maintenance ladder, his heavy boots slipping against the corroded rungs as he hauled himself upward toward the ceiling of the chamber.

Mark! Can you hear me? Mark! Sarah's voice shrieked through the radio, buried beneath a wall of rising static and the deafening roar of water below.

I'm on the ladder, Sarah! The back entrance collapsed! I'm going up into the house! Mark shouted into his collar mic, his lungs burning for air as the damp chill of the subterranean pipe gave way to the stagnant, freezing air of the abandoned cellar above.

He slammed his shoulder against the rotting wooden trapdoor at the top of the ladder. With a sharp crack of splintering timber, the door gave way, bursting upward into a shroud of thick dust and total darkness.

Mark hoisted himself through the opening, rolling onto the rotting floorboards of the Miller house cellar. He slammed the trapdoor shut behind him to block the rising dampness, then clicked his heavy-duty flashlight back on, sweeping the beam across the cavernous, debris-filled room.

The cellar was massive, its stone walls covered in thick sheets of gray mold and peeling wallpaper from decades of unchecked moisture. Broken furniture, rusted tools, and shattered glass littered the floor. But in the corner, half-hidden beneath a tattered tarp, sat an old wooden crib with a small white stuffed bunny resting gently on its mattress.

Mark approached the crib slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs. He shone his light directly onto the toy. It was pristine, completely untouched by the mold and decay surrounding it.

Mark, are you there? Please answer me! Sarah's voice finally punched through the static, sounding faint and desperate.

I'm inside the cellar, Sarah, Mark panted, wiping sweat and dust from his forehead. I found another bunny in a crib down here. The house... it feels completely frozen in time. Like nothing has moved since the day it was abandoned.

You need to find a way out of there immediately, Mark, Sarah pleaded, her voice breaking into quiet sobs. Lily just woke up again. She's standing at our living room window, and she's crying, Mark. She's crying because she says the little girl in the house is waving goodbye.

Mark froze, his blood running ice cold. He slowly turned around, shining his flashlight toward the dark, rotting wooden staircase leading from the cellar up to the main floor of the abandoned house.

At the very top of the stairs, standing quietly in the shadows, was a small figure wearing a teal knit sweater, clutching a white stuffed bunny toy against her chest.
