Chapter 10: The Spring Awakening

Spring arrived on the Massachusetts coast with an explosion of white apple blossoms, tender green pasture, and the sweet, rich scent of thawing marshland.

The estate had shed its gloomy, defensive atmosphere completely. The high iron security gates at the highway were kept propped open during daylight hours; the expansive front lawn, once kept in golf-course perfection by hired crews, was now dotted with wild clover, dandelions, and the wooden obstacles of a pony paddock Julian was building for Lily’s fourth birthday.

The east wing cottage where Rosa’s mother had spent her final years was renovated not into guest quarters, but into the headquarters for the Maria Evans Memorial Foundation—an initiative funded by Julian’s liquidated assets that provided full university scholarships and emergency housing for the children of domestic and service workers throughout New England.

Rosa managed the foundation’s grant committee from her desk in the library, working alongside Martha and two retired teachers from the village.

One sunny afternoon in May, Julian walked through the open French doors of the library, carrying Lily on his shoulders. The little girl was wearing a pair of miniature rubber boots, singing an invented song about bumblebees, her hands resting comfortably on Julian’s thick, dark hair.

Julian set her down, letting her run out onto the terrace to feed breadcrumbs to the blue jays.

He walked over to Rosa’s desk, leaning down to press a kiss against the top of her head. "How are the applications looking?"

"We approved twelve nursing scholarships this morning, Julian," Rosa smiled, looking up with eyes that held no shadow of the past. "One of the recipients is the daughter of the woman who cleaned the bathrooms at the Copley Plaza."

Julian smiled, pulling up a chair beside her and resting his hand over hers on the blotter.

"My mother would be very proud of you, Rosa," he said softly.

Rosa turned her hand, lacing her fingers through his, the two matching gold bands clicking together with a quiet, comforting chime.

"She’s proud of us, Julian," Rosa answered. "Because we finally let the light into this room."
