Chapter 4 - The Matte-Black Sedan

The matte-black sedan careened around the corner with reckless abandon, its tires screaming in protest against the asphalt as it fishtailed violently near the curb. Dust and gravel kicked up into the pristine air, settling over the manicured lawns like a plague of grey ash.

Arthur’s grip on the concealed Colt revolver tightened inside his jacket, his thumb pulling back the hammer with a faint, ominous click that only he could hear.

The vehicle slammed to a halt directly across from the driveway, blocking the exit of the police cruiser. The engine idled with a deep, guttural roar that rattled the windows of the neighboring houses. For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The tinted driver’s side window hummed downward at a glacial pace, revealing a face obscured by deep shadows and a wide-brimmed fedora.

"Father," a synthesized, distorted voice rasped from an electronic speaker inside the car. "You forgot to RSVP."

Officer Miller scrambled back to his feet, pulling his service weapon and aiming it squarely at the tinted window of the sedan. "Freeze! Turn off the engine and step out of the vehicle with your hands where I can see them! This is a restricted crime scene!"

The driver ignored the cop entirely. A gloved hand reached out slowly from the window, holding up a small, blinking digital tablet. On its illuminated screen was a live video feed of the interior of Arthur’s basement—specifically, the hidden wall safe behind the old workbench where Arthur kept his most dangerous, buried secrets.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. The calm exterior fractured slightly, revealing the burning inferno of a man pushed to the absolute edge.

"How did you get in there?" Arthur demanded, stepping past the police officer as if the younger man were nothing more than a minor annoyance.

"You left the back door unlocked forty years ago, Arthur," the distorted voice mocked softly. "And you’ve been living in a ghost town ever since. The safe is empty now. The ledger, the tapes, the names of every crooked politician and dirty cop in this county—they’re already uploaded to a server fifty miles away."

Rex let out a triumphant roar from inside the back of the police cruiser, banging his head playfully against the wire mesh partition. "That's checkmate, old man! Open the door and let me out, or the whole world finds out what you did in Vietnam!"

Officer Miller glanced frantically between Arthur and the armed vehicle. "Mr. Vance... what is he talking about? What ledger?"

Arthur didn't answer the police officer. Instead, he pulled his hand out of his suit jacket, revealing the heavy steel revolver. He didn't point it at the police, nor did he point it at the car. He pointed it straight up into the autumn sky and squeezed the trigger.

BANG.

The deafening roar of the gunshot shattered the suburban tranquility, echoing off the surrounding houses like rolling thunder. A flock of startled crows exploded from the canopy of the oak trees, scattering wildly across the darkening horizon.

The driver of the matte-black sedan flinched, the car lurching forward an inch before stopping again.

"You think data on a server can protect you from a man who has nothing left to lose?" Arthur’s voice boomed with terrifying authority, stripped of all its grandfatherly warmth. "Tell whoever sent you that the debt has matured. And I am coming to collect in full."
