Chapter 15 - The Open Road

The morning sun crested the jagged peaks of the Oregon range, bathing the ruined valley of Red Creek in a warm, golden light that washed away the shadows of the past. The town was entirely gone—nothing remained of the Lucky Star Saloon, the gallows, or the subterranean vaults except for a flat, barren circle of dark earth where the badlands had reclaimed their own.

Caleb stood beside his horse—a bay stallion he had left tied safely outside the valley limits—adjusting the brim of his black cowboy hat. His right hand was wrapped neatly in clean white gauze, and his dark overcoat felt lighter across his shoulders, stripped of the heavy iron locket that had weighed him down for a decade.

He mounted the saddle, feeling the familiar, steady rhythm of the horse beneath him. He took one last look at the empty expanse where Red Creek used to stand, watching the alkali dust dance freely in the morning wind.

The ledger was closed. The debt was paid in full. There were no more ghosts whispering his name from the dark, and no more contracts waiting in the dust for a bloodline to sign.

Caleb gathered the reins in his hands, turning the stallion's head toward the southern trail that led back toward Missouri, back toward the green orchards and the quiet country he had abandoned so long ago.

He gave the horse a gentle nudge with his heels, and the animal broke into a steady, unhurried walk down the winding mountain pass.

As he rode away from the badlands, the wind caught the edge of his dark overcoat, carrying with it the faint, sweet scent of spring rain and blooming apple blossoms—a scent he hadn't smelled since he was a boy, waiting for a future that had finally, mercifully, become his own.
