Chapter 8: The Long-Distance Call

As the kids became deeply engrossed in setting up the board game pieces, Clara’s cell phone buzzed loudly against the wooden coffee table, breaking the peaceful domestic atmosphere. She glanced at the screen, and her stomach tightened instantly. The caller ID read David. It was the exact call she had been dreading and anticipating ever since the luxury sedan pulled out of her driveway. She picked up the phone, took a slow, centering breath, and swiped to answer, stepping just a few feet away toward the kitchen archway so the children wouldn't hear the friction in her voice. "David," she said neutrally. "Clara, thank God," David’s voice rushed through the receiver, sounding breathless, stressed, and exhausted from his hotel room miles away. "My parents just called me. They're beside themselves, Clara. Eleanor is practically in tears, saying you threw them out of the house and humiliated them in front of the kids. What on earth happened?" Clara felt a sharp spike of adrenaline, her grip tightening around the plastic casing of the phone. "They didn't tell you the whole story, did they, David?" she asked, her voice dangerously quiet. "They didn't tell you they unlocked my house without my permission, buried my tree in hundreds of dollars of unsolicited garbage, and insulted my ability to provide for my own children?" There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line. David sighed deeply, the sound heavy with the chronic exhaustion of a man caught perpetually between two opposing forces. "Look, I know they overstep, Clara. I know they do. But it's Christmas. Can't you just smile, nod, and let things slide for one afternoon? You always have to make such a huge stand out of everything." Clara’s breath caught in her throat. The betrayal stung far worse than Eleanor’s insults because it came from the person who was supposed to be her partner, her teammate, her primary line of defense. "A huge stand?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "Protecting my home from boundary violations and refusing to let my kids be bought is making a huge stand? If you think my self-respect is negotiable, David, you are entirely mistaken." She didn't wait for his defensive reply; she ended the call right then and there, cutting off his sputtering protests with a decisive tap of her thumb.
