Chapter 15: Where the Road Ends

The midday sun beat down warmly through the dusty windshield of the red pickup truck as it crossed the state line, leaving the jagged rust-belt horizon far behind in the rearview mirror. The highway stretched out ahead of them in a long, endless ribbon of gray asphalt cutting through rolling green hills and quiet farming towns.

Inside the cab, the heavy tension that had gripped them since the midnight diner began to slowly dissolve into a peaceful, steady rhythm. The only sounds were the low, rhythmic hum of the truck’s aging engine and the soft rustle of the wind blowing through the cracked window.

Leo sat in the passenger seat, having finally unzipped the oversized leather jacket that had protected him through the night. He was staring out the window with wide, hopeful hazel eyes, watching the changing landscape of a brand new world unfolding before him. On the seat between them, resting safely next to the gear shift, sat the old, faded photograph of a young biker holding a baby, alongside the small folded piece of paper with Sarah’s final words.

Jax kept both hands firmly on the steering wheel, his knuckles slightly relaxed for the first time in ten years. He glanced sideways at his son, seeing the quiet resilience and the unwavering strength reflected in the boy’s profile. The road he had chosen no longer belonged to the club, the patch, or the violence of the open highway. It belonged to the future he was building right here, mile by mile, hand in hand with his son.

“You hungry, kid?” Jax asked, his voice soft and free of the heavy raspy burden it had carried back in the diner.

Leo turned his head, looking up at Jax with a bright, genuine smile that instantly mirrored the best parts of a ghost from the past. “Yeah,” the boy said softly. “I think I could eat a whole diner.”

Jax let out a low, rumbling laugh—a sound that felt entirely new, warm, and deeply human. He reached out with one calloused hand, resting it gently on the back of Leo’s small shoulder for a brief, reassuring moment before returning his hands to the wheel. Ahead of them, the road opened up wide beneath the endless blue sky, stretching toward Ohio, toward family, and toward a brand new beginning where the road finally ended right where it was supposed to.
