Chapter 15: The Dawn of Accountability

Three days after the dramatic proceedings in the general court-martial tribunal, the morning sun broke through the heavy clouds over Washington, casting a clean, warm light across the neoclassical columns of the Department of Defense headquarters. Inside a quiet, sunlit conference room on the third floor, Commander Evelyn Vance sat alone at the long mahogany table, her white naval dress uniform immaculate, her ribbons and service stars catching the morning light. The charges against her had been quietly dropped late the previous evening, superseded by an emergency directive from the Secretary of Defense ordering a full, transparent declassification of all historical operational records relating to the USS Orion disaster.

The door swung open softly, and Lieutenant Commander Marcus Cole stepped into the room, carrying two steaming cups of coffee and a copy of the morning edition of the national paper. The headline sprawled across the front page read: NAVY TO REOPEN ORION INVESTIGATION AFTER THIRTY-YEAR COVER-UP EXPOSED. Marcus set a cup down in front of Evelyn and slid the newspaper across the table with a genuine, relieved smile. "Well, it looks like your reckless crusade actually worked," Marcus said, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite her. "The Secretary just accepted Admiral Sterling’s early retirement, effective immediately. The oversight committee is launching a full bipartisan inquiry into the historical archives. You did it, Evelyn."

Evelyn picked up her coffee cup, wrapping her hands around the warm ceramic, her expression calm, composed, and deeply at peace. She looked down at the newspaper headline, tracing the bold letters with her eyes before taking a slow, natural sip. "I didn't do it alone, Marcus," she replied softly. "My father carried the torch for ten years, and a hundred and twelve sailors provided the momentum. All I did was refuse to drop it." The door opened once more, and a young naval aide in a crisp white uniform stepped in, handing Evelyn a sealed official envelope bearing the gold crest of the Chief of Naval Operations.
