Chapter 9 - The Missing File

The flashing red system alert pulsed rhythmically on the fifty-five-inch screen, casting an ominous crimson hue over Arthur’s grim face. He paused, his finger hovering over the remote as he read the diagnostic code generated by the cloud server. Warning: Data stream interruption detected in Sector 7—Master Bedroom Ensuite. Arthur’s brow furrowed deeply. The master bedroom was the one place in the house where he had strictly forbidden cameras to protect their privacy, relying only on the hallway sensors for general perimeter security. Yet, according to the server architecture, a hidden peripheral had been transmitting data from inside their private bathroom for months.

Elena pushed herself off the bookshelf, her panic momentarily giving way to a cold, predatory composure. She smoothed down her satin beige blouse with a trembling hand, though her breathing remained shallow and fast. She saw the confusion settling into Arthur’s expression and seized upon the opening to regain control of the narrative.

“You’re digging a grave for yourself, Arthur,” Elena whispered, her voice regaining its low, dangerous hiss. “You think you found my secrets, but you don’t even know what’s hidden under your own roof. You’ve been so busy playing the oblivious provider that you never bothered to look at what I was actually protecting myself from.”

Arthur slowly turned his head to look at her, his thirty-five-year-old face hardened into an impenetrable mask. “What are you talking about, Elena? Talk.”

Before Elena could answer, a loud, metallic clatter echoed from the dim hallway leading toward the back of the house. It wasn’t the sound of a door closing or floorboards creaking; it sounded distinctively like the heavy iron latch of the laundry room utility hatch falling back into place. Lily let out a soft gasp, pressing her face entirely against Arthur’s grey trousers, her small frame trembling violently as she clutched her battered stuffed plush bunny toy with the pink ribbon so hard the seams threatened to tear.

Arthur’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer. He hadn’t locked the laundry room door after reviewing the initial footage, and the house was supposed to be completely empty except for the three of them. His hand slid slowly down from the remote, dropping into his pocket where his heavy metal keyring rested—a makeshift weapon in a house that was rapidly turning into a domestic war zone.

“Did you invite someone here?” Arthur demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper as he stared past Elena toward the dark hallway.

Elena didn’t answer immediately. A strange, twisted smile crept back onto her lips, neither entirely triumphant nor entirely terrified, but carrying the weight of a secret far darker than anything Arthur had uncovered on the security monitor.
