Chapter 15 - Sunrise on the Open Road

The rusty lock of Locker 44 clicked open with a satisfying, metallic snap, and Mark pulled the heavy metal door wide. Inside sat a worn canvas duffel bag filled with enough cash, clean passports, and secure comms equipment to guarantee their freedom across the border by morning.
Before Mark could grab the bag, heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel behind them. The man in the suit stepped out from the shadows of the bus terminal overhang, flanked by two armed operatives. He looked cold, tired, and entirely unforgiving.
“End of the line, Mark,” the man said smoothly, raising a compact pistol. “Hand over the drive.”
Jax stepped sideways, placing himself directly between the gunman and the family. “You’ll have to go through me first.”
“Gladly,” the man replied, tightening his finger on the trigger.
Before the shot could be fired, the heavy public address system above the terminal blared to life, broadcasting a live federal emergency alert: “All port authority logistics corruption warrants executed. Federal marshals have secured the downtown broadcasting network. The syndicate is dismantled.”
The man in the suit froze, his phone buzzing violently in his pocket with incoming panic alerts from his own superiors. He lowered the pistol slowly, realizing the game was truly over.
Mark didn't wait. He grabbed the duffel bag, scooped Leo up into his arms, and led Sarah and Jax toward the idling cross-country bus whose doors were standing wide open.
Leo climbed up the steps, turning back to look at the bright morning sun finally breaking over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and orange. He held up the old faded photograph and the heavy brass key, smiling brightly at his father.
“Are we going home, Daddy?” Leo asked softly.
May you like
Mark wrapped his arm around Sarah and pulled his brother Jax close onto the bus steps as the doors hissed shut behind them.
“Yeah, buddy,” Mark smiled, looking out at the endless open road ahead. “We’re finally going home.”
