Chapter 15 - The Final Ride

The heavy iron wrench struck the scarred operative squarely in the shoulder, throwing off his balance just enough to ruin his lunge.

"Toby, get out of here!" Jax roared, but the boy stood his ground near the doorway, holding another heavy piece of scrap metal.

Miller scrambled for his dropped revolver, his fingers closing around the grip just as two more tactical operatives emerged from the cellar trapdoor. With two deafening cracks, Miller fired, striking the leading operative in the tactical vest and sending him crashing back down into the darkness.

"Jax, use the key!" Miller shouted over the gunfire, kicking the manila folder across the floorboards toward the biker's boots. "The floor safe is behind the desk! The key opens the vault where they're holding Sarah!"

Jax didn't waste a second. He dropped to his knees behind the battered manager's desk, ignoring the chaos of the gunfight erupting around him. His fingers brushed against a heavy iron ring set flush into the floorboards. He pulled out the brass skeleton key Toby had given him and shoved it into the rusted keyhole.

With a deep, guttural grunt, Jax turned the key. A heavy mechanical clack echoed through the room as the reinforced steel vault door beneath the desk swung open, releasing a rush of warm, stagnant air and revealing a brightly lit concrete bunker below.

And there, standing at the bottom of a short flight of concrete stairs, her face pale, bruised, but undeniably alive, was Sarah.

"Jax," she gasped, her voice trembling as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Without looking back, Jax vaulted over the edge of the open vault, dropping down to pull his wife into his arms in a desperate, fiercely protective embrace. Above them, the final echoes of gunfire faded as Sheriff Miller and young Toby held the line against the remaining syndicate guards.

As the sirens of the state police finally wailed in the distance—real, honest police this time—Jax helped Sarah up through the vault door, taking Toby's small hand in his free palm. The ghosts of the highway had finally been laid to rest, and their final ride was just beginning.
