Chapter 13 - The Mountain Chase

The rhythmic, heavy thumping of rotor blades reverberated off the sheer granite cliffs of the Diablo Mountain ridge, growing louder and more frantic with every passing switchback.

Maeve leaned hard into the left curve of the narrow dirt trail, her tires throwing up a spray of loose shale and gravel that cascaded down the steep thousand-foot drop into the canyon below.

She glanced in her rearview mirror and caught a terrifying sight: a sleek black corporate utility helicopter crested the ridge a mile back, its powerful searchlight sweeping aggressively across the switchbacks in search of their convoy.

Up ahead, Jax was riding the vintage blue motorcycle like a man half his age, the custom inline engine screaming with raw power as it easily conquered the punishing incline that had defeated so many other machines.

Reno’s sidecar rig bounced violently over a rocky outcrop, Leo gripping the metal handrail with white knuckles while pointing frantically toward a narrow fork in the trail ahead.

Cole dropped back to ride flank right beside Maeve, shouting over the roar of the exhaust pipes.

"Keep your eyes on the trail, kid! Don't look back at the bird!" Cole yelled, his face caked in a thick layer of red mountain dust.

"They can't land a chopper on this grade, but they'll try to herd us toward the old logging bridge!"

Maeve nodded tightly, keeping her focus locked entirely on the tail light of Jax's bike dancing through the thick morning fog.
