Chapter 6 - The Thermite Breach

The thermite charge detonated with a blinding, magnesium-white flash that painted the cafeteria walls in stark, violent shadows. The heavy steel hinges sheared off like paper, and the massive portal crashed inward onto the white tiled floor, kicking up a thick cloud of acrid grey smoke and concrete dust.

Marcus screamed, throwing his arms over his head as debris clattered against the stainless-steel serving counters.

Through the billowing smoke, three figures materialized in full tactical gear, their assault rifles raised and sweeping the room with laser sights. At their front strode Commander Hayes, a heavily scarred veteran with cold, dead eyes and an unyielding posture that mirrored General Eleanor Vance’s worst attributes. Hayes’s weapon was leveled directly at Rachel’s chest.

“Secure the target!” Hayes roared through his respirator filter, his voice muffled and metallic. “Drop the toggle, Captain! Now!”

Rachel did not drop the toggle. Instead, she stepped forward, positioning herself directly in front of the spilled coffee puddle, her black jacket still unzipped to display the glowing override device.

“Commander Hayes,” Eleanor spoke, her voice cutting through the chaos with absolute authority. “Hold your fire. That is an order.”

Hayes paused, lowering his rifle by a fraction of an inch as he recognized the general, but his finger remained tense on the trigger.

“General Vance, you’re in a compromised zone,” Hayes barked, his eyes darting between Eleanor and the junior officer. “Central command reports a critical network freeze originating from this sector. Protocol dictates immediate termination of any unauthorized personnel accessing the subnet.”

“Protocol doesn’t apply here, Hayes,” Eleanor said smoothly, stepping casually into the line of fire between the commander and Rachel. Her medals gleamed in the amber emergency light. “The captain is under my direct supervision. We were conducting a classified stress-test of the perimeter defenses.”

Hayes stared at Eleanor, his scarred face twisting in deep suspicion.

“A stress-test with the blast shields locked and the server diagnostic looping static?” Hayes demanded, taking another step into the cafeteria. His boots splashed directly into the dark coffee puddle, tracking brown stains across the pristine white tiles. “That’s a severe breach of operational security, General. The tribunal will want a full accounting.”

“You’ll get your accounting, Commander, once the test concludes,” Eleanor replied, her tone leaving no room for argument. “Now order your men to fall back to the corridor and secure the perimeter from the outside.”

Rachel watched Eleanor with narrowed eyes, her mind racing. She knew the general was stalling, but for what purpose? Was Eleanor protecting the command structure, or was she buying time for something even more dangerous?

Before Hayes could answer, Marta pushed herself off the structural pillar. The older woman stumbled forward, her blue sling swinging awkwardly as she stepped directly into the path of Hayes’s assault rifle.

“Don’t do it, Commander,” Marta cried out, her voice cracking with desperate urgency. “If you shoot her, the override transmits automatically. I saw the wiring. It’s a dead-man’s switch.”

Hayes froze, his eyes snapping to the older woman.

“Who the hell are you?” Hayes growled, lowering his rifle entirely as he realized the civilian was dangerously close to the line of fire. “Get this cleaner out of here before she gets caught in the crossfire.”

“She stays,” Rachel said softly, her thumb pressing harder against the toggle switch. “And so do you, Commander—unless you want to explain to the tribunal why your team walked into a live data trap.”
