Chapter 2 - The Glowing Screen of Betrayal

The blue light from David’s smartphone illuminated the living room with an eerie, synthetic glow. Evelyn stared at the display, her breathing hitching in her throat. Bold letters across the interface read "Files Sent," accompanied by a green checkmark confirming transmission to an anonymous federal investigator. The digital architecture of her entire life was collapsing in a matter of seconds.

"No," Evelyn whispered, taking a stumbling step backward until the back of her legs hit the bottom stair. "You didn't. David, tell me you didn't send those files. That’s our life savings, our retirement, everything!"

David slipped his phone into his pocket with infuriating nonchalance. He walked slowly toward the center of the room, stopping just a few feet away from Clara’s rigid military stance. The dynamic between her husband and her grandmother suddenly clicked into place with terrifying clarity. They weren't reacting to a crisis; they were executing a meticulously planned ambush.

"It’s not just our savings, Evelyn," David said, his voice entirely devoid of the warmth she had supposedly shared with him for a decade. "It’s the offshore shell companies you opened behind my back. The signatures you forged on my tax documents. The federal government calls that wire fraud. Your grandmother just helped me expedite the paperwork."

Clara lowered the wooden cane slightly, though the threat in her posture remained unchanged. Her eyes, faded by age but sharp as razor wire, pierced through Evelyn’s denial.

"In the military, we call that a court-martial for insubordination," Clara stated coldly, her chest medals clinking softly as she shifted her weight. "You thought because you inherited your mother's stubbornness that you could bypass command authority. You embezzled from the family trust to fund your speculative tech startups, thinking nobody would audit a war hero."

Evelyn shook her head violently, hot tears finally spilling over her lashes. "I was trying to save our legacy! The traditional markets were crashing, and I saw an opportunity to multiply our wealth. I was going to pay it back before anyone noticed!"

"Before anyone noticed," David repeated bitterly, stepping closer to Clara’s side. "That’s your entire philosophy, Ev. Secrets, omissions, and pure arrogance."

Before Evelyn could muster a defense, David's phone buzzed aggressively in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the incoming notification, and his expression hardened into absolute stone.

"They received the package," David said, holding the screen up for Clara to see. "An arrest warrant has just been issued for wire fraud and identity theft."
