Chapter 8

In the sleek, glass-walled penthouse conference room of the Vance Corporation headquarters, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The remaining members of the board of directors sat in leather ergonomic chairs, staring down at their polished mahogany table as if it might open up and swallow them whole. At the head of the table sat Marianne Vance, wearing her signature white suit, her expression glacial and commanding. The empty chair to her right had belonged to Julian for ten years, but his name had already been scrubbed from the brass plaque on the door and replaced with a temporary placeholder. Marianne placed her hands flat on the table, her diamond rings catching the light of the morning sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the financial district. "The era of mismanagement, embezzlement, and personal greed is officially over," Marianne announced, her voice carrying an absolute authority that brooked no disagreement. "As the majority shareholder by virtue of the emergency court injunctions and the recovery of my late father’s estate, I am restructuring this board effective immediately." Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Arthur Pendelton, a frail man who had turned a blind eye to Julian’s illicit transactions for a decade in exchange for bloated consulting fees, cleared his throat nervously. "Marianne, surely we can handle this internal audit without bringing public scandal to the corporation. Stock prices will plummet, and—” "Stock prices plummeted the moment federal agents hauled Julian out of a hotel suite in handcuffs, Arthur," Marianne interrupted smoothly, her gaze locking onto him with terrifying precision. "You signed off on those fraudulent asset transfers in twenty-eighteen. I have your digital signature right here in my briefing packet." She tapped a thick dossier sitting beside her coffee cup. Arthur turned visibly pale, his hands trembling as he gripped the armrests of his chair. He realized then that he was no longer dealing with the polite, marginalized widow the board had pushed aside years ago; he was facing a woman fueled by a relentless desire for total institutional cleansing. "Effective immediately," Marianne continued, scanning the room of terrified executives, "all executive compensation packages are frozen, all overseas subsidiaries are being audited by independent forensic accountants, and anyone who participated in Julian’s cover-up will be handed over to federal prosecutors before the close of business today." The silence in the boardroom was absolute. No one raised an objection. No one dared to challenge her. Marianne had reclaimed her throne, and the cost of her victory would be paid in full by everyone who had ever conspired against her.
