Chapter 8 - The Subterranean Trap

"We have visual on the lower stairwell! Drop your weapons and step into the light, Mr. Vance!" a marshal’s voice boomed down from the opening, echoing harshly off the concrete walls.
Julian shoved Leo and Maya behind his back, positioning himself between the children and the stairs. He held up his empty hands, the small tactical flashlight clattering to the floor, its beam rolling sideways to illuminate a damp patch of mold on the wall.
"Don't shoot! The children are right behind me!" Julian shouted up, his voice cracking with desperate authority. "Give us a minute, we're coming out!"
"Move slowly! Hands where we can see them!" the marshal barked back, the barrel of his firearm remaining rigidly pointed at the center of the stairwell.
Julian turned to Leo and Maya, his expression softening into an agonizing mix of sorrow and fierce determination. He knelt down, grasping Leo's shoulders tightly. "Listen to me, Leo. When we get to the top, they're going to separate us. I need you to take Maya's hand and do exactly what Agent Miller says. Do not fight them. Do you understand?"
"No! No, we're not leaving you!" Maya sobbed, her small arms wrapping desperately around Julian's neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "You promised! You said we'd never go back!"
"I have to protect you, sweetheart," Julian whispered, his own voice breaking as he gently unpeeled her fingers from his jacket. "This isn't the end. I will find you. No matter where they take you, I will find you."
As Julian stood up and slowly raised his hands, guiding the weeping children up the concrete steps toward the harsh floodlight, a sudden, violent shudder shook the foundation of the house above them. A low, ominous groaning sound echoed through the concrete walls—not from the marshals or the machinery, but from deep within the earth beneath the estate.
"Sir, we need to get out of here now!" one of the marshals shouted from the top landing, his radio crackling with static. "The structural integrity of the sub-level is compromised! The water mains have burst!"
Before anyone could react, a massive torrent of freezing, muddy water cascaded down the concrete stairwell like a breaking dam, instantly sweeping the children off their feet and washing them backward into the dark abyss below.

"Leo! Maya!" Julian screamed, diving blindly into the freezing, rushing floodwaters as the heavy steel ceiling hatch slammed shut above them, plunging the sub-level into pitch-black silence.
