Chapter 6: The Weight of Inheritance

The front door clicked shut as Julian retreated to his private study, retreating into the fortress of his desk and telephone lines, desperate to salvage whatever influence he still possessed. The grand foyer fell into a heavy, suffocating quiet. Only the ticking of an antique grandfather clock marked the passage of time.
Elena remained standing by the mahogany side table, staring down at the faded photograph of Toby. The boy sat huddled on the velvet bench, his dirty knees pulled up to his chest, looking entirely out of place in a home that was legally, biologically his.
“Are you really my mom?” Toby asked softly, breaking the silence. He looked up, his blue eyes searching Elena’s face for any sign of rejection or deceit.
Elena swallowed hard, fighting the knot in her throat. She walked over and sat beside him on the velvet bench, ignoring the grime that rubbed off onto her designer clothing. She wrapped her arms around his frail shoulders, pulling him against her chest. Toby stiffened for a fraction of a second, unused to maternal warmth, before melting into her embrace, burying his face in the fabric of her blouse.
“Yes, Toby,” Elena whispered, kissing the top of his messy brown hair. “I am your mother. And I am so, so sorry I wasn’t there to find you sooner.”
Marcus stood a few feet away, watching them with a softened expression. He pulled a worn manila folder from beneath his arm and placed it gently on the edge of the table.
“He’s not safe here, Elena,” Marcus said quietly. “Julian has enemies far more dangerous than reporters. Men who financed his early campaigns using funds tied to illicit shell companies. When Julian couldn't pay them back seven years ago, they used the adoption broker as leverage. That’s why Toby was taken in the first place. It wasn't an accident.”
Elena pulled back slightly, holding Toby by the shoulders while keeping him close. “Are you saying Julian knew they would take him?”
“He knew they wanted collateral,” Marcus corrected. “He didn't think they’d actually snatch the infant from the hospital nursery, but they did. Julian panicked and covered it up by claiming the child died of sudden infant syndrome, while quickly bringing in a substitute infant from an anonymous agency to keep up appearances for his wealthy benefactors.”
Toby looked up, his young face confused by the dark politics of his existence. “What does collateral mean?”
“It means bad people used you as a pawn, sweet boy,” Elena answered, her voice hardening with resolve. She looked at Marcus. “What do we do now? If Julian is locked in his study trying to protect his career, he’ll destroy anything—and anyone—in his path to keep this hidden.”

“We go public,” Marcus said without hesitation. “Before dawn breaks, we upload the digital files to every major news outlet in the state. Julian’s empire was built on lies. It’s time for it to collapse.”
