Chapter 1

The grand staircase curved upward like a frozen wave of polished mahogany, reflecting the cold, pristine light of the crystal chandelier overhead. Clara stood near the base of the staircase, her fingers smoothing the fabric of her beige cardigan. The loungewear set she wore was soft, expensive, and entirely wrong for the heavy atmosphere of the room. Around her knees, the thick white rug absorbed the silence of the massive suburban estate. Three identical faces stared up at her with large, dark eyes. The twins and their brother possessed an eerie stillness that defied their youth, dressed identically in crisp blue polo shirts and khaki pants. Toy cars were scattered across the wool in a chaotic arc, miniature red and yellow sedans abandoned mid-race.
A few feet away, Julian stood with his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his tailored dark suit. His dark wavy hair was neatly combed, framing a face dominated by a full, manicured beard and eyes that betrayed a quiet, crushing fatigue. He looked every bit the powerful corporate executive, yet his posture radiated helplessness.
Clara adjusted her blonde hair, which was twisted into a loose bun at the nape of her neck. She looked down at the three identical boys who had just tested her patience with their silent assessment. A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of her mouth. She kept her voice low, measured, and entirely devoid of the forced cheerfulness nannies usually brought to such assignments.
May you like
“I haven't decided if I like you three yet either,” Clara said softly.
The words hung in the vaulted air. One of the boys blinked slowly, his small hand resting on a plastic toy car. He did not look away, nor did he smile. The air in the room felt heavy with the ghosts of predecessors who had packed their bags in the middle of the night. Julian shifted his weight, his white dress shirt catching the glare of the recessed lighting. He said nothing, but his jaw tightened. He had hired Clara because her agency boasted an unblemished record with high-security, emotionally volatile private cases. But nothing in her resume could prepare her for the peculiar gravity of this household. The clock on the mantelpiece ticked forward, marking the official start of a strict forty-eight-hour trial period. Clara knelt lower on the plush rug, letting her presence settle into the room like a quiet anchor. She knew the stakes, and she knew the unspoken rules of Julian’s shattered world.
