Chapter 10: Unlocking the Surface

With the legal agreements signed and the corporate empire safely dismantled, only one loose end remained unresolved beneath the surface of the estate's swimming pool. Twilight was beginning to bleed across the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and indigo as Elena and Julian stood once more at the edge of the water. This time, there was no panic, no frantic gasping, and no threat of violence. Julian held a long-handled pool net equipped with a heavy-duty mesh basket, while Elena operated the underwater LED lighting controls from a weatherproof wall panel near the patio steps.
The pool lights flickered from blue to a bright, clear white, illuminating the crystal-clear water all the way down to the deep end. Resting on the blue mosaic tiles, the black semi-automatic pistol looked smaller and less menacing than it had under the cover of night. Julian lowered the net slowly into the water, guiding the mesh basket along the floor until it settled directly beneath the firearm. With a gentle, practiced sweep, he scooped the weapon into the net and began drawing it slowly toward the surface, water draining through the mesh with a soft, steady rush.

He lifted the heavy net out of the water, resting it on the damp coping stones. Neither of them touched the metal directly; instead, Julian used a pair of thick rubber-coated utility tongs to lift the pistol out of the net and place it directly inside a heavy-duty steel lockbox lined with foam padding. We need to turn this over to federal authorities anonymously, Elena said, watching the heavy metal lid snap shut with a dull thud. If we leave it here or try to dispose of it illegally, it remains a ticking time bomb that Eleanor or anyone else could use against us down the road.
Julian locked the metal box with a small brass key, slipping it safely into his jacket pocket. I have a contact at the federal prosecutor’s office who handles corporate corruption cases, Julian said, his expression firm and resolved. I will deliver the weapon along with an affidavit detailing its provenance and Eleanor’s attempted coercion. It will close the loop permanently. Elena nodded in agreement, looking out across the sprawling estate that had finally stopped feeling like a prison. The air felt lighter, the shadows less oppressive, and for the first time since their marriage had become entangled in Eleanor’s web, the future felt entirely their own.
