Chapter 1: The Broken Glass And The Bitter Words

The shattered crystal fragments of the trophy cabinet glinted under the harsh lobby lights, catching the reflections of a morning that had gone entirely wrong.

Elena Vance stood amid the glittering debris, her chest heaving underneath her tailored charcoal business suit. Her sharp blonde hair was slightly disheveled from her furious storm through the revolving doors. Her eyes darted wildly from the trembling old woman on the floor to the cold, unforgiving gaze of Julian Sterling, the man who had just threatened her livelihood and perhaps her very freedom.

Julian crouched on the polished marble floor, his dark suit jacket pulling tightly across his broad shoulders as he wrapped a steady arm around the shoulders of the weeping little girl in the pink dress. The white stuffed toy clutched in the child's small hand was smudged with dust from the lobby floor.

"Are you all right, mom?" Julian asked softly, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that cut through the cavernous silence of the corporate atrium.

The little girl—his daughter, Maya—looked up through tear-stained lashes and patted his arm, her childish voice surprisingly steady. "We're fine now, honey."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded her veins. Just moments ago, she had been screaming at the frail, grey-haired woman kneeling on the floor, assuming her to be a vagrant who had wandered in from the damp city streets.

"I didn't know," Elena stammered, taking a jerky step backward, her high heel crunching on a shard of imported crystal. "She was on her knees by the planter. Anyone would have thought—this is a Class-A building, Mr. Sterling. Security should have—"

"Security answers to me, Elena," Julian interrupted, standing up slowly. He didn't raise his voice, but the absolute stillness in his posture commanded total terror. "And you answer to the board. Or rather, you used to."

Elena’s throat went dry. "You can't mean that. I closed the Henderson account yesterday! I brought in seven figures of billable revenue this quarter alone! You can't fire me over an old lady who smells like—"

"Don't finish that sentence," Julian warned, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice.

He turned his back on her, dismissing her completely as he helped his mother, Clara, to her feet. Clara brushed off her worn wool coat with quiet dignity, her trembling hands giving away the shock of the verbal assault she had just endured.

Elena stood frozen, humiliated and furious, watching the man she had hoped to impress walk away with the cleaning lady and a child. She needed to salvage her career before the board meeting at noon. She pulled out her phone, dialing her direct superior with trembling fingers.

"Marcus," she hissed the second the line connected. "Listen to me very carefully. Julian Sterling just lost his mind in the lobby over a vagrant. We need to spin this before he calls HR."

Marcus’s voice on the other end was deathly quiet, devoid of its usual booming confidence. "Elena... you didn't look at the security monitor before you came in, did you?"

May you like

"What are you talking about?" Elena demanded, her voice rising in pitch. "Get down here right now!"

"Elena," Marcus whispered, the line crackling with tension. "The woman you just screamed at... she owns sixty percent of this building's holding company."
