Chapter 6

The hospital corridor was quiet, save for the hum of the vending machines near the nurses' station. Detective Thomas leaned against the wall outside Room 412, his arms crossed over his chest, watching Eleanor Vance glide down the hallway toward the elevators. Her heels clicked rhythmically against the floor, each step a declaration of supreme confidence.

Thomas pushed off the wall and stepped into the room just as the elevator dinged in the distance. Martha was standing by the bed, her breathing slightly elevated, her fists clenched at her sides. Leo was awake, watching the door with wide, frightened eyes.

“She threatened us,” Martha said without preamble, turning to face the detective. “She offered to pay me off. And she made it clear that if we don't take the money, accidents happen.”

Thomas pulled a small digital recorder from his coat pocket and pressed stop. The tiny red light flickered out. He held it up with a grim smile. “Everything she said just went straight onto the precinct server. The room mic picked up every word, including the veiled threat.”

Martha let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders sagging slightly as the tension drained from her frame. “Will the prosecutor accept it?”

“It establishes motive and intimidation, but it’s still circumstantial,” Thomas admitted, walking over to check Leo’s pulse. The boy shrank away slightly before relaxing under the detective’s gentle touch. “Judges are hesitant to issue arrest warrants for high-profile socialites based solely on a heated conversation in a hospital room. We need the physical evidence from the floor safe to match the financial trail.”

“The ledgers show she was draining the accounts,” Martha said urgently. “The medical invoices were fraudulent. Arthur knew it.”

“I know,” Thomas said, running a hand through his thinning hair. “Forensic accountants are tearing through the digital backups we pulled from the estate’s off-site server this morning. But corporate shells take time to untangle. Eleanor’s legal team filed an emergency injunction an hour ago, trying to freeze the estate assets and have Leo transferred to a private psychiatric facility under her direct custody.”

Leo gripped the blanket tightly, his knuckles turning white. “I won't go back there,” he whispered, his voice trembling with repressed terror. “She locked the door. She said nobody would ever find me if the fire didn't finish the job.”

Martha rushed to the bedside, dropping to her knees so she was at eye level with the boy. She took his small, cold hands in hers, her expression fierce and unyielding. “Listen to me, Leo. Nobody is taking you anywhere. You are safe here. Do you hear me?”

Thomas watched the exchange, his expression softening. He crouched beside them, resting a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “The court hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine. I’ve arranged for protective custody to be assigned to Martha. Legally, she’s registered as your primary caregiver under an emergency petition I filed an hour ago.”

Martha looked up at the detective, surprise flickering in her dark eyes. “You did that?”

“I have a badge, Martha,” Thomas said quietly. “And I have a conscience. But tomorrow morning, we walk into a courtroom filled with expensive lawyers who will tear us apart if we don't have an ironclad case.”
