Chapter 14: The Threshold of Tomorrow

The morning sun filtered brightly through the kitchen windows as David prepared his briefcase for his first day back at work. The atmosphere in the house was calm, steady, and filled with a quiet optimism that felt earned rather than forced. The tragedy of Room 314 would always be a part of their story—a dark, permanent chapter in the book of their lives—but it no longer defined their entire existence. They had learned that love without vulnerability was just an illusion, and that true strength lay in holding space for each other when the world fell apart.

Clara stood by the front door as David zipped his leather briefcase shut and slipped into his coat. She walked over to him, her expression serene and affectionate. She adjusted the collar of his shirt with familiar, loving care.

"Have a good first day back," Clara said softly. "Don't let Sarah work you too hard."

David smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close. He breathed in the familiar scent of her shampoo, feeling an immense wave of gratitude wash over him. "I won't. I've learned my lesson about overworking myself. No more hiding behind spreadsheets."

"Good," she murmured, resting her head against his chest, right where her hand had rested in the nursery weeks ago. "Because I like this version of you so much better."

David kissed the top of her head, holding her tightly for a long moment before stepping back. He opened the front door, stepping out onto the porch into the crisp morning air. Before pulling the door shut, he looked back at her one last time, sharing a silent, knowing smile that communicated everything words could not express.

He walked down the driveway toward his car, his steps confident and measured. The street was quiet, the neighborhood waking up to a brand-new day. As he started the engine and pulled away from the curb, he felt a deep, profound sense of peace settling into his bones.
