Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom cast a brilliant, merciless light over the gathered elite. Velvet gowns and sharply tailored tuxedos rustled as the crowd held a collective breath. In the center of the polished marble floor sat a massive silver gift box, perfectly secured with a bright red ribbon. Kneeling beside it was Jax, a thirty-eight-year-old security consultant whose dark hair was slicked back, his navy blue suit jacket straining slightly across tattooed shoulders. Across from him stood five-year-old Lily, her dark brown hair tied in a neat high bun, wearing a cream-colored ruffle dress that seemed entirely too delicate for the heavy atmosphere of the room.

Lily raised a small, steady finger and pointed directly at the package. Her big dark eyes blinked slowly against the glare of the lights. She looked at Jax with complete composure, her tiny frame motionless.

"Please check that gift box, sir," Lily said softly, her voice carrying easily through the suddenly hushed ballroom.

Jax froze. His eyes flicked from the child’s small hand down to the gleaming silver wrapping. The air in the room felt heavy, chilled by the sudden shift in mood among the wealthy patrons watching from the perimeter. Jax adjusted his cuffs, letting his gaze narrow as he inspected the immaculate ribbon. It was tied with a precise, professional knot that did not match the haphazard wrapping style of the evening’s charity gala. He swallowed hard, feeling the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes pressing down upon his broad shoulders.

"What did you see, little one?" Jax asked softly, his voice a deep, gravelly hum that betrayed none of the sudden adrenaline spiking through his veins.

Lily looked straight up into Jax’s hardened eyes, showing no fear whatsoever. Her expression remained entirely earnest.

"A man put a little black box inside," Lily replied, her tone conversational and devoid of panic.

Jax did not hesitate. He stood up abruptly, his height and imposing presence commanding immediate attention. The stern, urgent look in his eyes cut through the whispered anxieties of the guests near the double doors, where a pale-faced nurse and another young child stood clutching each other in terror. Jax scanned the exits, his jaw tightening into a hard line.

"Lock the gates," Jax commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Nobody leaves this room. Bring me the delivery logs. Now."

The panic rippled outward.
