Chapter 7

Eleanor sat across the mahogany desk from Marcus Vance, watching as the veteran attorney stamped the final blue-backed document with a heavy brass seal. The room smelled of old paper and leather, a comforting scent of absolute order and finality.
“It’s all done, Eleanor,” Marcus said, sliding the thick folder across the desk toward her. “The revised living trust completely removes Thomas Vance as primary beneficiary. Furthermore, I’ve drafted a restraining order application against both Thomas and his friend Brenda to prevent any further unauthorized access or harassment regarding your coastal property.”
Eleanor picked up a heavy fountain pen, her signature steady, elegant, and entirely unhesitating as she signed her name across the dotted lines. “And the beach house security?”
“Upgraded this morning,” Marcus replied, smiling approvingly. “Smart locks installed on all exterior doors, complete with a direct feed to local law enforcement and a private security patrol that will sweep the perimeter every two hours. Anyone stepping foot on that grass without your explicit written permission will be hauled away in handcuffs before they can even blink.”
Eleanor closed the folder with a soft, satisfying thud. “Good. I worked too hard and sacrificed too much to watch my life’s work turned into a cheap party pad for disrespectful children.”
Just as Marcus reached for his desk phone to dismiss his assistant, the intercom buzzed sharply. Marcus pressed the talk button with a frown. “Yes, Sarah? I thought I instructed you to hold all calls.”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Vance,” the assistant’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding slightly flustered. “It’s a Ms. Clara Vance on line two. She’s demanding to speak with Eleanor immediately, claiming it’s a family emergency of the highest order.”
Eleanor raised an eyebrow, a cold, quiet smile touching her lips. She gestured to Marcus to put the call on speaker. Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second before pressing the button and routing the audio to the desk speakerphone.
Clara’s voice immediately flooded the quiet office, frantic and shrill. “Eleanor! Please, you have to listen to me. Thomas is an absolute fool, we know that, but ruining his entire future over a stupid misunderstanding is completely unhinged! We are family! Blood is thicker than water, Eleanor!”

Eleanor leaned forward, resting her elbows on the mahogany desk, her voice dropping into a register of calm, devastating authority. “Clara, for thirty years, I watched you and your husband mock my career, belittle my contributions, and raise a son who believes he is entitled to everything I built with my own hands. The water of my life is clean, Clara. The blood of your family is toxic. Do not call this office ever again.”
With a single tap of her finger, Eleanor severed the call, plunging the office back into a profound, peaceful silence.
