The Cruise Ship Departs

At PortMiami, the luxury cruise liner Celebrity Equinox was boarding its VIP terrace passengers under the bright Florida sunshine.

Evelyn Hayes stood at the priority check-in counter in the grand terminal, wearing her oversized designer sunglasses, a wide-brimmed straw sunhat, and three gold bangles rattling on her wrist.

"Here is my card for the onboard incidental account and the private cabana package, darling," Evelyn said with an airy wave of her hand, sliding Claire’s black corporate card across the marble counter.

The attendant, a polite young man with a gold nametag, swiped the card through the terminal.

A harsh, red error message flashed across the screen: TRANSACTION DECLINED / CARD CANCELLED BY ISSUER.

The attendant swiped it again. The same error beeped.

"I apologize, Mrs. Hayes," the attendant said politely. "This card has been closed by the primary account holder. Do you have an alternate payment method?"

Evelyn’s smile vanished. "That is impossible. That is a corporate platinum account. Try it again."

"Ma'am, it is returning an explicit 'Do Not Honor' code," the attendant explained, the line of affluent passengers behind her beginning to murmur.

Evelyn pulled out her personal debit card—the joint account with Richard.

The attendant inserted the chip. INSUFFICIENT FUNDS / BALANCE: $42.18.

"There must be a glitch in your system!" Evelyn raised her voice, her face flushing crimson with humiliation. "I demand to speak to the port manager!"

She grabbed her phone and dialed Claire’s number.

"The number you have dialed is currently not accepting incoming calls from this caller," an automated operator announced.

She dialed Richard.

Richard answered on the third ring. "Hello, Evelyn."

"Richard! What did that ungrateful little brat do?" Evelyn screamed into the receiver, stepping away from the counter as passengers stared. "My cards are declining at the gate! The penthouse suite is frozen! Transfer $10,000 from the savings account immediately!"

"There is no money in the savings account, Evelyn," Richard’s voice came back, cold, level, and completely devoid of fear. "I transferred the remaining $8,000 to cover the mortgage on the house. I have canceled the country club membership. And I have packed three suitcases of your clothes."

"Are you insane?" Evelyn gasped, her voice trembling with sudden, terrified panic.

"No, Evelyn," Richard said. "For the first time in thirty-four years, I am completely sane. Have a nice cruise if you can pay for it. If not, find a hotel. The locks on the Alpharetta house are being changed at three o'clock."

The line went dead.

Evelyn stood in the middle of the glittering Miami cruise terminal, holding a dead phone and two useless pieces of plastic, surrounded by hundreds of strangers, completely and utterly alone.
