Chapter 11

The cold sea breeze carried the harsh smell of diesel exhaust and rotting kelp across the desolate concrete pier. Ellie writhed desperately in the chief's arms, her tiny hands clawing at the empty air as she spotted Arthur stepping down from the container ramp.

"Grandpa! Grandpa, help me!" Ellie wailed, her voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror as tears streamed freely down her flushed cheeks.

Arthur took an involuntary step forward, his muscles tensing to close the distance, but two tactical operatives immediately slammed their heavy rifle butts into his shoulders, forcing him back to his knees.

"Stay back, old man," the lead operative growled, pressing the barrel of his weapon against the back of Arthur's neck.

Miller started to draw his service pistol from his waistband, but a sharp crack echoed across the pier as a bullet grazed the concrete inches from his boots. Three red laser dots instantly painted his chest.

"I wouldn't do that, detective," the police chief called out smoothly, adjusting his grip on the trembling toddler. He looked down at Ellie with a chilling, manufactured paternal smile that didn't reach his dead eyes. "After all, you're a good cop. It would be a terrible shame if you died in a tragic dockside shootout while trying to rescue a fugitive and an unregistered child."

"She's a baby, you psychotic bastard!" Miller roared, his face turning crimson with rage as he kept his hands raised just high enough to avoid another shot. "Let her go! You have the files! You have everything you wanted!"

"We have the files, yes," the chief agreed, nodding slowly. "But Arthur here has something much more valuable locked away in that stubborn brain of his. The root encryption keys to the offshore accounts. And until he recites them word for word, this little girl remains my insurance policy."

Arthur slowly pushed himself up from the concrete, ignoring the throbbing pain in his shoulders. He looked directly at the chief, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fury.

"Let her go, and I'll give you the keys right now," Arthur said, his voice steady and cold. "No tricks. No backups. Just you, me, and the algorithm."

The chief chuckled, a dry, hollow sound that grated against the crashing waves below. "You think you're in a position to negotiate terms, Arthur? You stepped into my trap the moment you walked into Maplewood Park."

"Maybe," Arthur replied, taking a slow, deliberate step forward while the operatives tensed around him. "But you forgot one fundamental rule about family."

Before the chief could react, Arthur whistled a sharp, distinctive two-note melody—the exact tune he used to play to help Ellie fall asleep at night.

Ellie instantly stopped crying. Her small body stiffened, and with a sudden, surprising burst of strength, she slammed her small elbow directly into the chief's stomach, biting down hard onto the fleshy part of his hand.

"Ah, you little brat!" the chief screamed, dropping Ellie onto the concrete with a curse.

"Now, Miller!" Arthur roared.
