Chapter 5 - Packing in the Dark

The harsh reality of their situation settled over Sarah like a physical weight. She didn't waste time asking questions or demanding explanations. Years of training by a paranoid husband had embedded a survival protocol deep inside her psyche.

“Emma, get up, baby. We’re going on a night adventure,” Sarah said softly, pulling the comforter back. Her voice remained remarkably steady, belying the violent trembling of her hands.

Six-year-old Emma rubbed her eyes, sitting up in her pink pajamas. “Are we playing hide and seek with the big man?”

“Something like that. Put on your white sneakers and your denim overalls. Right now,” Sarah commanded gently, already moving to the closet. She grabbed a small canvas backpack, shoving three changes of clothes, a favorite stuffed rabbit, and a pouch containing their emergency passports into it.

Out in the hallway, Jax stood guard over the unconscious tactical agent, periodically peering through the peephole of the front door while pressing a heavy thumb against a radio earpiece he had apparently looted from the intruder.

“They’re sweeping the alley,” Jax muttered, his deep voice carrying into the bedroom. “We go out the basement window or we don't leave at all.”

Sarah zipped the backpack shut, hoisted it over her shoulder, and scooped Emma up into her arms. The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around her mother’s neck, burying her face in Sarah’s shoulder.

Sarah walked out into the living room, stepping carefully over the threshold of the hallway. The agent was starting to stir, a low groan escaping his lips as he clutched his bruised neck.

“Leave him,” Jax said, grabbing Sarah firmly by the elbow to guide her toward the kitchen floor grate.

“He’s going to call more of them,” Sarah argued, her blue eyes flashing with defiance.

“Let him try. My truck is parked three blocks away in a wooded lot. If we make it to that truck, we stand a chance.” Jax dropped to his knees, sliding back the heavy iron latch of the basement bulkhead door built into the kitchen floor. A draft of damp, cool air rushed up from the darkness below.

Sarah looked down into the black void. Every fiber of her being screamed against going down there. It was dark, cramped, and terrifying.

“Emma, hold onto mommy tight,” Sarah whispered, adjusting the child in her arms.

Jax descended first, his heavy boots hitting the concrete floor below with dull thuds. He held his hand up, catching Sarah as she dropped down into the basement with Emma.

As soon as they hit the floor, a loud, heavy fist began hammering against the front door upstairs.

“Open up! FBI! Execution of a federal warrant!” a muffled voice bellowed through the wood.

Jax’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury. He turned and shoved open the exterior basement doors, letting the pale moonlight flood the dusty concrete steps.

“Move,” Jax hissed, pushing Sarah toward the exit.
