Chapter 10: The Midnight Visitor

Hours slipped by in a blur of financial cross-referencing and encrypted depositions as Clara worked tirelessly alongside Marcus Vance and Agent Miller, who had arrived at the safehouse via a secure back entrance. The digital clock on the microwave glowed red, reading 2:14 AM, when a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed against the heavy steel front door of the safehouse. Marcus instantly froze, his hand dropping smoothly toward the concealed sidearm beneath his dark jacket, while Agent Miller gestured for Clara to step back into the fortified interior hallway. Another knock sounded—three measured raps followed by a pause—the exact cadence of the operational emergency signal Marcus had established earlier that evening. Marcus drew his weapon cautiously, stepping up to the peephole while signaling Miller to cover the flanks. With a swift, fluid motion, Marcus unlocked the heavy deadbolts and yanked the door open, ready for an assault. Instead, a disheveled figure stumbled across the threshold, gasping for breath and clutching a torn black blazer. It was Elena. Her immaculate appearance was entirely ruined; her dark hair was matted with rain, and her expensive designer shoes were caked in thick mud. She looked terrifyingly vulnerable, a stark contrast to the cold, untouchable manipulator who had pointed her finger at Clara just twelve hours earlier. "They're coming for all of us," Elena rasped, coughing violently as she collapsed against the hallway wall. Marcus kept his weapon trained on her center mass, demanding answers. "Who is coming, Elena? Speak up or get out right now," Marcus warned sharply, his voice devoid of any sympathy. Elena raised a trembling hand, pointing a bruised finger toward the street outside where the rain was beating down in sheets. "The primary partners from Zurich. Julian talked too much during his transport; they know he's singing to federal prosecutors. They aren't going to wait for a trial to tie up loose ends," Elena sobbed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered into a million jagged pieces. Clara stepped out from the hallway shadows, her hand resting firmly on her protruding belly as she looked down at the woman who had orchestrated her destruction. There was no triumph in Clara's heart, only a cold, sobering realization that the criminal underworld they had unwittingly stepped into operated by rules far more brutal than any federal indictment.
