Chapter 10

The morning sun broke through the tall glass windows of the St. Jude administrative boardroom, casting long, clean beams across the polished oak conference table. The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of a wall clock and the quiet rustle of printed financial audit reports. Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the table, his silver hair neatly combed, wearing a charcoal-gray suit that replaced the evening pinstripes.
To his right sat Elena Vance, dressed in a sharp, dark-blue blazer over a simple white blouse—a deliberate transition from her nursing uniform to her new administrative role. Across from them sat three senior board members, men and women who had spent the last twelve hours reviewing the devastating audit trail Julianna Sterling had left behind.
"The numbers speak for themselves," Arthur said, sliding the final dossier across the center of the table. "Julianna’s shell companies have been siphoning funds for over three years. The federal investigators have frozen her personal assets pending formal indictment. She won't be posting bail anytime soon."
A heavy silence settled over the board members. One of the senior directors, a silver-haired woman named Margaret, looked up from the financial ledgers with a grim expression. "It’s a tragedy for the family name, Arthur, but you did the right thing. If we had covered this up, the hospital would have lost its federal accreditation within the month."
"We didn't just save the accreditation," Arthur replied, gesturing toward Elena. "We saved the patients. And today, we begin the process of rebuilding our integrity."
He stood up, walking over to the projection screen at the front of the room. With a tap of his remote, the projector flickered to life, displaying a high-resolution photograph of Dr. Clara Vance during her active surgical days, smiling warmly while holding a recovering child.

"Effective immediately," Arthur announced, his voice carrying the full weight of the chairman's authority, "the board has voted unanimously to dedicate the entire east wing as the Clara Vance Pediatric Center. Furthermore, I formally welcome Elena Vance to the board as our new Director of Patient Advocacy and Medical Ethics."
The board members nodded in unanimous approval, offering polite, respectful applause. Elena felt a lump form in her throat. She looked down at her hands, remembering the struggle in the hallway just the night before, realizing that every hard decision, every exhausted shift, and every moment of standing up for what was right had finally led to this meaningful intersection of justice and healing.
