Chapter 2

Officer Rachel Miller stepped across the threshold of the living room, her heavy duty boots making a solid, reassuring thud against the imported hardwood floor. Every movement was deliberate, calibrated to project absolute authority without escalating the volatile energy humming in the room. She did not draw her weapon, nor did she raise her voice. Instead, Miller simply closed the distance between the foyer and the center of the room, her eyes flicking rapidly from the raised leather belt in Julian’s trembling grip to the jagged white ceramic pieces littering the Persian rug, and finally to the blooming contusions coloring Elena’s face.
“Drop the belt, Mr. Vance,” Miller said, her tone level, devoid of emotional inflection, yet carrying the unmistakable weight of the law.
Julian’s fingers tightened convulsively around the brown leather, the metal buckle glinting under the recessed ceiling lights. For a fraction of a second, his muscles tensed as if he might challenge the directive, his ego desperately whispering that he was still the master of this domain. But Miller’s right hand rested casually near her holster, fingers poised with terrifying competence. Slowly, humiliatingly, Julian’s arm descended. The leather belt slipped from his suddenly lax fingers, hitting the floor with a dull, anticlimactic thud right beside the shattered remains of the vase.
Beatrice stepped forward, her silk blouse rustling as she attempted to regain control of the narrative through sheer force of upper-class entitlement. “Officer Miller, thank goodness you’re here. My daughter-in-law had a complete psychotic break. She threw herself against the furniture, screaming incoherently, and tried to attack my son with those ceramic shards. We called you to protect us from her violence.”
Elena let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sob. The audacity of Beatrice’s lie was staggering, yet it was the exact same script they had used twice before to manipulate emergency responders. Only this time, the timeline had fractured.
Miller turned her head slightly toward Beatrice, her expression cooling by several degrees. “Mrs. Vance, Senior, is it? Step back toward the hallway, please. Keep your hands where I can see them.”

“This is an outrage!” Beatrice squawked, her pristine blonde hair bouncing indignantly. “We are pillars of this community. My son contributes heavily to the police benevolent association!”
“Your son is currently the subject of an internal affairs-adjacent financial fraud investigation and a federal wiretap authorization signed three hours ago,” Miller replied smoothly, producing a small digital recorder from her breast pocket and pressing play. The room was immediately filled with the crystal-clear audio of Julian and Beatrice conspiring over speakerphone just that morning, detailing precisely how they planned to fabricate Elena’s mental instability to seize her estate. Julian’s face drained of all remaining color, shifting from pale to a sickly, grayish white as the tinny sound of his own treason echoed off the pristine white walls.
