Chapter 7: Returning to the Scene

Three days after the eviction, Connor and Maya returned to the outskirts of the Vance estate, accompanied by their attorney, Marcus Vance, and a court-appointed inventory clerk. The grand iron gates, usually swung wide for arriving guests and luxury sedans, were now padlocked with heavy steel chains. A bright yellow legal notice was plastered across the stone pillar, declaring the property a historical estate under court trusteeship.

As their car pulled up to the security checkpoint, Maya felt a familiar cold knot tighten in her stomach. The memories of long hours scrubbing floors, enduring passive-aggressive insults, and hiding Leo in the back pantry whenever visitors arrived rushed back with visceral intensity. She gripped the strap of her bag tightly, her knuckles whitening.

Connor noticed her distress immediately. He reached across the console and placed his hand over hers, his touch steady and grounding. "We only need to go inside to retrieve your personal identification papers and the baby’s registry files from the staff quarters," he reminded her softly. "Marcus is with us. The sheriff’s deputy is unlocking the side entrance. We won't even have to look at the main house."

Maya took a deep, shuddering breath and nodded. "I know. It’s just... seeing those gates closed. It feels like waking up from a nightmare and realizing the monster was real."

"The monster is locked outside the gates now," Marcus Vance said from the front passenger seat, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with a reassuring smile. "Mrs. Vance tried to file a secondary motion this morning claiming the staff quarters contained personal property belonging exclusively to her corporate holdings. The judge threw it out within ten minutes. Everything in that cottage is yours, legally and unequivocally."

The deputy unlocked the side pedestrian gate, and the three of them walked up the familiar stone path leading toward the modest brick cottage tucked behind the towering oaks. The autumn air was crisp and smelled of damp earth and fallen leaves. Unlike the main mansion, which stood silent and austere, the cottage looked peaceful, framed by the small herb garden Maya had secretly tended during her rare moments of free time.

Inside, the rooms were exactly as they had left them on the night of the eviction. Two small suitcases sat packed near the doorway, exactly where Connor had set them before they walked out. Maya walked over to the wooden bassinet in the corner, running her fingers gently over the soft quilt her grandmother had stitched years ago—one of the few family heirlooms she had managed to smuggle into the estate when she first arrived.

"Everything is here," Maya whispered, a profound sense of closure washing over her as she zipped the first suitcase closed. The shadows of the past were being packed away, neatly sealed and left behind in the dust where they belonged.
