Chapter 13

The grand library of Balmoral smelled intensely of old leather, pipe tobacco, and polished mahogany, illuminated by a towering wall of windows that opened out onto the storm-swept moor. King Edward stood before the unlit stone fireplace, his broad shoulders squared beneath his dark civilian overcoat, his face etched with a fury far deeper and colder than the anger he had displayed in the capital. The guards left Cassandra standing alone in the center of the vast Persian rug, closing the heavy double doors behind them with a definitive thud that echoed like a gavel striking a judge's bench. For several long moments, neither man nor woman spoke, the tension between father and daughter stretching to a near-breaking point.

"You have been busy, Cassandra," Edward finally said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he turned slowly to face her. He raised his hand, holding a small printout of an encrypted alert log that had just been intercepted by the palace’s advanced digital defense systems. "An unauthorized satellite transmission routed from the coordinates of this estate directly to an unsecured independent news network in Fleet Street. Do you care to explain what domestic treason you have just committed?" Cassandra did not flinch under his gaze. She stood tall, her hands resting calmly at her sides, her voice steady and clear. "I communicated the truth, Father. The truth you and my grandfather spent decades hiding in the dark cellar beneath our feet."

Edward’s face flushed a dark, angry crimson, his fists clenching tightly at his sides. He took two long, commanding strides toward her, towering over her with the full, suffocating weight of his royal authority. "You know nothing of what it takes to hold this nation together!" he shouted, the restraint finally cracking in his voice. "You think history is built on pure ideals and gentle transparency? It is built on hard choices, on sacrifices, on burying the things that threaten to tear society apart from the inside! Julian was sick, Cassandra. His mind was a shattered mirror, and if we had let him speak, his madness would have destroyed the crown before I ever took the throne."

"And so you locked him away and erased him from existence," Cassandra retorted, her voice rising to match his intensity, though her eyes remained entirely cold. "Just as you planned to do with me. You didn't banish me to Balmoral for my health; you banished me because my blood carries the exact same 'flaw' that threatens your pristine illusion of perfection." Edward stopped dead in his tracks, staring at his daughter with a sudden, horrifying realization. The anger in his eyes flickered, replaced for a brief second by an agonizing flash of parental terror and profound sorrow. "I did it to save you," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I locked you away to protect you from the wolves who would tear you to pieces if they ever saw what I saw."

"Protection is just another word for a cage, Father," Cassandra said quietly, stepping back as the distant sound of emergency sirens began to echo faintly across the moorland from the estate gates. "And the cage is broken." Edward spun around toward the window just as a convoy of government vehicles and unmarked press vans breached the perimeter gates, their headlights cutting through the driving rain like a swarm of angry hornets. The secret was out; the digital packet had landed. The king turned back to look at his daughter, realizing with absolute, crushing finality that the empire he had spent fifty years defending was about to burn to the ground, and there was nothing left in his arsenal capable of stopping it.
