Chapter 7: The Final Ledger

The municipal records office was eerily quiet at this hour, the polished marble floors echoing sharply beneath their footsteps as they followed a security guard down the endless hallway of the fourth floor. The air smelled of old paper, floor wax, and industrial coffee. Magistrate Sarah Lin stood waiting by her open office door, her silver-rimmed glasses catching the harsh fluorescent light overhead. She nodded grimly as Evelyn led Arthur and Leo into the room.
"Do you have the media?" Magistrate Lin asked, her voice professional and devoid of small talk.
Arthur reached into the inside pocket of his light grey shirt, withdrawing a small, black encrypted solid-state drive. He held it between his thumb and forefinger for a fraction of a second, staring at the tiny blinking indicator light before stepping forward and placing it gently on the center of the magistrate’s polished mahogany desk.
"Everything is on there," Arthur said, his voice steady now, though his hand trembled slightly. "Every account transfer, every falsified inspection report, and the complete audit trail linking the Maya trust reserves to the current commercial development."
Magistrate Lin picked up the drive, inspecting its serial number before inserting it into a dedicated, air-gapped terminal on her desk. A progress bar instantly appeared on the high-resolution monitor, scrolling through thousands of file names in a blur of green text.
"Verification in progress," the automated system chimed softly from the speakers.
Evelyn stood beside the desk, her arms crossed over her brown jacket, her eyes fixed on the screen as the files verified one by one. Leo hovered near the doorway, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, watching the digital dismantling of the life Arthur Vance had spent twenty-five years constructing.
"The data integrity is one hundred percent," Magistrate Lin announced after a tense three-minute wait. She looked up from the screen, fixing her gaze squarely on Arthur. "Mr. Vance, by turning over these records voluntarily, you are cooperating with an ongoing federal investigation into corporate fraud and criminal negligence. However, it does not absolve you of your personal liability in the Maya fund embezzlement."
Arthur nodded slowly. "I don't expect absolution, Magistrate. I just want it to stop."
May you like
"It stops tonight," Lin said, reaching for her desk phone to notify the federal prosecutor’s duty officer.
Evelyn turned away from the terminal, walking toward the large window that overlooked the rain-slicked plaza outside. The city lights stretched out into the distance, indifferent to the corruption and the grief that had shaped their fates tonight.
