Chapter 5 - The Hidden Blueprint

I knelt down and picked up the crystal tiara pin. The metal was still warm, as if it had been clutched tightly in someone's palm just moments before. My mind raced through the logistical impossibility of it. Clara was miles away, locked in the back of a police cruiser speeding toward the downtown precinct. Unless she had dropped it earlier during her frantic dash—no, Sarah had swept this hallway clean of debris right after the initial confrontation in the foyer.

“Sarah, stay here with Lily,” I ordered, standing up and slipping the pin into my pocket. “Do not open this door for anyone, under any circumstances, until you hear my voice.”

“Mr. Cross, please don't go wandering into the west wing alone,” Sarah pleaded, her face pale with terror. “The house is old. There are things here—things Clara spent hours studying in the estate’s historical archives. She used to spend whole afternoons in the basement library reading about the original owner.”

“What kind of things?” I asked, pausing with my hand on the brass doorframe.

“Blueprints, sir,” Sarah replied, her voice dropping to a nervous whisper. “Original architectural surveys from eighteen-eighty. The estate was built by a shipping magnate who didn't trust the law. He had escape tunnels built under every major room, connecting the master suite directly to the servant quarters and the carriage house.”

The puzzle pieces began clicking together with sickening speed. The text message with the closet photo. The sudden disappearance of small items. The strange, muffled sounds I had occasionally dismissed as settling pipes during the dead of night. Clara hadn't just married me for my wealth and social standing; she had discovered the architectural secrets of the house and had been using them to monitor every move I made, long before we even walked down the aisle.

I strode purposefully toward the master bedroom at the far end of the hall. The heavy mahogany double doors were unlocked, swinging open with a soft, ominous creak.

The room was pristine, smelling faintly of lavender and high-end perfume. The king-sized bed was made, adorned with decorative silk pillows. But as I walked toward the walk-in closet where the photograph had been taken, I noticed a subtle draft of cool air cutting through the climate-controlled stillness of the suite.

I stepped inside the cedar-lined closet, running my hands along the back panel where my custom suits hung in neat rows. I pressed against the wooden backing.

With a soft click, a section of the shelving unit pivoted inward on hidden brass hinges, revealing a dark, narrow stairwell descending into the pitch-black bowels of the foundation.

I pulled out my smartphone, flicking on the flashlight beam. The bright LED light cut into the subterranean gloom, illuminating a fresh set of muddy footprints pressed into the dusty concrete steps.

I took a deep breath, gripped the pocket knife in my right hand, and stepped over the threshold into the dark.
