Chapter 6: The Secret in the Basement Archives

Julian pulled his hand out of his pocket as if he had been burned, the gold pocket watch sliding across the polished floorboards of the hallway. It skidded a few feet before coming to a stop against the baseboard of the wainscoting. The ticking sound stopped instantly, replaced by a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through the foundation of the entire building.

Lily walked over, her cream-colored shoes clicking softly on the floor. She didn't look scared anymore; her face wore an expression of intense, unnatural focus. She knelt down beside the watch and reached out her small fingers, hovering just millimeters above the engraved gold casing.

""Don't touch it, Lily!"" Eleanor cried out, scrambling to her feet with a rustle of heavy lace. She lunged forward, scooping the watch up before the child could make contact. As soon as Eleanor’s skin made contact with the metal, the hum ceased entirely, leaving the hallway dead silent once more.

Julian stood up, brushing off his tuxedo trousers. His expression had hardened from shock into grim determination. ""We need answers. This venue—the Grandview Estate—has been in operation for over a century. My family held events here, your family held events here. There has to be a history room, a basement archive where old records are kept.""

Eleanor clutched the watch tightly against her chest, feeling the cold metal press through the thin lace of her dress. ""The basement was sealed off years ago after a pipe burst. The manager told us during the walkthrough that the lower level is entirely flooded and structurally unsafe.""

""Rules apply to normal people, Eleanor. Not to whatever is happening right now,"" Julian said, grabbing her hand. He looked down at Lily. ""Stay here, sweetie. Wait right by this door. We'll be back in five minutes.""

""She's coming back,"" Lily said quietly, not moving an inch from her spot on the carpet.

Julian paused, a cold knot forming in his stomach. ""Who is coming back?""

""The lady with the white coat,"" Lily replied, pointing down the dark corridor toward the unmarked service stairs that descended into the bowels of the building. ""She went down there to find the rest of the clocks.""

Eleanor didn't wait for Julian to process the child's words. Driven by a frantic mixture of fear and an overwhelming compulsion to uncover the truth, she turned and marched toward the heavy metal door marked *AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY*. She shoved her shoulder against the push bar, and with a heavy metallic groan, the door swung open, revealing a dark, concrete stairwell that plunged downward into pitch blackness.

A smell drifted up from the depths—old dust, damp earth, and the distinct, unmistakable metallic tang of ozone, as if a heavy electrical storm was brewing directly beneath their feet. Julian stepped in front of Eleanor, pulling a small tactical flashlight from his tuxedo inner pocket—a remnant of his groom-preparation kit—and clicking it on. A sharp beam of white light cut through the gloom, illuminating concrete steps descending into a subterranean maze.

""Stay behind me,"" Julian instructed, his voice echoing in the stairwell.
