Chapter 14 - The Final Broadcast

The rain continued to pour down in relentless sheets as Loa, Sarah, Hayes, and Evelyn huddled beneath a concrete overroad bridge a mile away from the Mojave base. The distant wail of base security sirens echoed faintly over the desert wind, but here, hidden beneath the massive highway span, they were shrouded in darkness.

Evelyn set her laptop on a dry patch of concrete, opening the battered casing. The screen flickered to life, casting a pale, bluish glow across their exhausted, rain-soaked faces. Sarah Chen stepped forward, plugging the brushed-aluminum hard drive directly into the laptop’s USB port.

“Mounting drive,” Sarah whispered, her fingers hovering anxiously over the trackpad. “Please tell me the Halon gas didn’t fry the sectors.”

A progress bar appeared on the screen, pulsing green. For three agonizing seconds, the interface hung frozen, before a massive directory of files exploded across the display, cataloging every single illegal shipment, financial transfer, and offshore bank account linked to General Thomas Vance and his syndicate.

“We have it,” Evelyn breathed, a tear of relief cutting a clean track through the grime on her cheek. “The entire ledger. Complete with digital signatures from the Joint Chiefs' procurement office.”

“We need to upload it to the federal civilian registry immediately,” Major Hayes said, scanning the horizon for any sign of approaching headlights. “Before the base command manages to sever the regional fiber lines.”

Loa Sing reached into her wet coat pocket and pulled out the small black voice recorder she had confiscated at the St. Regis banquet hours earlier. The device was waterlogged, its plastic casing cracked, but the OLED screen was still faintly glowing. She pressed the master upload button, syncing the recorder directly to Evelyn’s laptop.

“Mirroring files to the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Department of Justice simultaneously,” Loa ordered, her voice ringing with absolute finality. “Execute.”

With a soft electronic chime, a global transmission progress bar began to climb rapidly: 10%... 45%... 80%... 100% – Transmission Complete.

At that exact moment, the harsh glare of high-beam headlights swept across the underside of the overpass. Three black unmarked SUVs slid to a halt on the gravel road above them, doors flying open as heavily armed federal marshals—accompanied by two senior civilian investigators from the Department of Justice—poured out onto the road.

“Hold your positions! Federal authorities!” a voice shouted down from the embankment.

Loa stood up slowly, raising her hands not in surrender, but in a quiet gesture of professional completion. She looked up at the federal officers standing above them in the rain, holding the glowing laptop open for all of them to see.

“We have the complete ledger of the brass syndicate,” Loa announced loudly, her voice cutting through the storm. “The investigation is closed. Time to make the a
